Top senator slammed for comparing Italy’s first black cabinet minister to an orangutan

Prime Minister Enrico Letta has harshly criticized a top Italian senator who likened the country’s first black Cabinet minister to an orangutan, the latest episode of high-profile racial tension in a nation grappling with immigration.
In a statement Sunday, Letta denounced Roberto Calderoli’s words as “unacceptable” and “beyond every limit.”

Calderoli, the Senate’s vice-president and a leader of the anti-immigrant Northern League party, made denigrating remarks about Immigration Minister Cecile Kyenge while he was speaking at a party rally Saturday in northern Italy, the populist movement’s power base.
“When I see images of Kyenge I cannot help think, even if I don’t say that she is one, of a resemblance to an orangutan,” Corriere della Sera newspaper quoted Calderoli as saying. On Sunday, Calderoli said he was making a joke, and meant no offence to the minister.
Kyenge is a Congolese-born doctor who became Italy’s first black minister when Letta’s Cabinet was sworn in in April. Reactions to her appointment have added to political tensions in Italy this summer, and Letta’s coalition government, which faces economic and other pressures, is extremely fragile.

There are extremely few black people in Italy, so they are not well versed in what is politically correct on the subject among their European peers.

All night , 24 hours , when I lived in Tacoma , you could get a beer too after 4:00 am when the bars closed with your steak, eggs & hash browns , lol.I remember when I would sit out all night in the outdoor wicker bars in Barcelona , drinking pitchers of Sangria , always thought , there should be a 4:00 am steak house here , lol. Luckily , I had a Lady Friend that worked at the hotel I stayed at , her two brothers worked there , dining room & bar is what they covered....

Yeah, the food is the biggest loss when moving from anywhere to anywhere.

When I left New England, I missed the "{insert city} House of Pizza" and the quality of the Chinese Food.

When I leave the USA, it is Denny's. The diner atmosphere essentially. Pancakes 24x7. This atmosphere plays heavily in movies (Pulp Fiction, Casino, etc) and it is often ignored as a national treasure. The simple things really...

A good , late night diner deserves its place , regardless of type of fare or geographical location.No doubt.

I was in Barcelona 5 or 6 months ago. A lot has changed (for the better) since I lived there and I did not find any signs of "economic collapse".

The coffee was good everywhere in Spain, Italy and Germany... the donut coffee is not bad in the US , I have not eaten @ one in at least 30 years ...

There are Dunkin Donuts in Berlin as well, although in Spain it's called something else. It's called Dunkin Coffee. The only one I've ever been to was the one that was also a Subway at Plaza de Castilla in Madrid. It shut down 2 years ago.

Any suggestions on finding a huge Dunkin Donuts style coffee in Europe? I can get great coffee in small portions, but finding a huge quality coffee is difficult. (I consider starbucks to be garbage).

They use Spanish olive oil and source everything locally. Since Spain is small, they can get everything locally and fresh, including the meat.
