‘What the BEEP Were They Thinking’: U.S. Abandoning Brand New, Multi-Billion Dollar Buildings in Afghanistan! The two-story, windowless, 64,000 square feet of offices and operations center that compose the U.S. Military’s headquarters in Afghanistan cost $34 million to complete. A building to repair the military’s vehicles and other equipment cost $45 million. And the State Department spent $80 million and signed a 10-year lease on a site for a consulate, according to a Washington Post report. But these sites are expected to see little to no use as they have either been deemed in a dangerous location or relatively useless as the U.S. military expects to pull out combat troops by 2014. http://imageshack.us/a/img809/9461/eyqg.jpg

This is the story of waste that is still cheesing me.

US agency baffled by modern technology, destroys mice to get rid of viruses
$170,000 of PCs, printers, keyboards, cameras, and mice destroyed in gross overreaction.

As to the OP there is a thread on this somewhere. I can't remember the name of the thread but will look for it later. One of the more infuriating threads here.

Not to mention, if they left them for the Afghan people, they wouldn't be able to afford to use them as the air conditioning would be too expensive to run and maintain. Those buildings will have to be demolished. What a waste.

Waste? I don't think so. Every single penny spent served exactly the purpose for which it was intended - namely, to fill the pockets of military-industrial contractors and assorted hangers-on. Well, mission accomplished! There is no "waste" here ...

I read that the buildings were wired 110 and the Afghans would need 220 lines to use them. It would be very expensive to convert.

Here's a thread related to the B2 Stealth Bomber.

700 million? IIRC that's wrong.

ETA: Well, upon research I found this. B-2 stealth bomber cost is 737M at flyaway cost. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyaway_cost)

Flyaway cost is one measure of the cost of an aircraft. It values the aircraft at its marginal cost, including only the cost of production and production tools immediately accruing to the building of a single unit.[1] It excludes prior costs such as research and development (treating these as sunk costs), supplementary costs such as support equipment, or future costs such as spares and maintenance.[2]

There are other possible measures of aircraft cost:
- Flyaway cost plus research and development cost divided by the number of aircraft.
- Total cost over the lifetime of the aircraft program, including maintenance, divided by the number of aircraft.

I've read estimates as high as 2.2B a plane. [what they would cost total- maintenance, and everything included]

737M is ridiculous, but that is the number they tell you to not sound ridiculous. The actual cost is a lot higher.

F22's cost per plane is $500 million. $66.7 billion in development costs plus $150 million per jet. 187 planes = $500 million each. Cheap compared with the B-2.

B-2 development cost: $44.75 billion
Unit cost: $737 million
Total unit cost: 21 planes @ $2.8 billion each
