•Around 70 percent of Mexican adults are now classified as overweight
•Only 10 per cent overweight in 1989 - before fast food was widely available
•The young and poor are the worst-affected groups

The U.S. has finally lost its dubious honour of having the world's highest number of overweight and obese people.

Fuelled by a worsening diet of fizzy drinks and cheap fast food restaurants, Mexico has now become the fattest nation in the world.

Around 70 per cent of Mexican adults are now overweight and a third of them are obese, causing a range of serious health problems.

This completely changes my view of the world.

Also... Mexico is in North America, not South America, like the article claims.

It is North American and Central America (itself a part of North America) and the Americans as a whole. Unfortunately, I'm not in Mexico right now so I couldn't help with this.

It is big conspiracy to keep them from climbing over the fence into the USA.

It's hard to swallow that fat "fact"... Does this (number) really take total population (almost 3:1 US/Mex) into account, or are they talkin' %?

Actually, I believe Mexico has banned GMO corn altogether (I may be wrong but remember seeing an article a while back about it). Don't know about other GMO's but they take their corn seriously down there.

The original Mayan diet was healthy. Whole grain corn, beans, vegetables. Globalism made them all fat with fast food, Cocal Cola and other sugary drinks.

Fat people can still be agile though. Jackie Gleason for instance

This is what happens when you allow people to buy what they want. Freedom is dangerous.

well, i was taking the articles word for it on the fast food being the cause- but if you look at the other top countries, a lot of them don't have fast food chains.(or not a lot of them- that aren't already bombed out in civil war)

Clearly. We need to appoint Michael Bloomberg to some new U.N. position that has jurisdiction over the world, so he can limit Coke and fast food for good.

Lard of the pig.

You could eat nothing but lard and you won't get fat.

Fry some grains up in that shit, that's what gets you fat.

I'm guessing this is all related to GMO corn subsidies.

Truth. Sedentary people are also more likely to be obese/overweight.

I've been to Mexico a lot, and to be honest, I've never seen the kind of obesity we have here while down there.

Even though they only surpassed us by 1%, this is one title I'm glad to see the U.S. lose. It's a terribly embarrassing title to behold and I wish no country had this issue.

Like all of the articles on this make fast food sound like the main culprit. Sure the "westernized" fast food joints are known for being high in calories and low in nutritional value, but you can eat fast food and maintain a healthy weight. It's all about the calories in and calories out balance, as well as quality of these calories. Personally, I eat like 60% of my meals at my university's buffet (which includes a dessert bar ) since I get X amount of free meals as an employee, yet my BMI is 18.5. Moderation and being active enough to avoid a surplus of calories that end up as fat, is key to staying in that health weight range. Eat to live instead of living to eat.
