Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four forecast for Hollywood remake
Ben Child
guardian.co.uk,

Hollywood is planning a new version of Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell's classic dystopian science-fiction novel which warned of the dangers of totalitarian government and spawned the term Big Brother.

The new version is being put together by a consortium of Hollywood production companies including Imagine Entertainment, which is partly owned by Oscar-winning film-maker Ron Howard. Shepard Fairey, the street artist who produced the iconic Barack Obama "Hope" poster, was instrumental in bringing the project to the attention of the producers.

George Orwell's 1984 has risen to Amazon's top 100 list

There is some kind of irony in the latest news to be making the rounds. You may have already seen this on Twitter or Facebook, but in the wake of the NSA scandal and whistleblowing by Edward Snowden about the U.S. government's massive surveillance operation on the public at large, including tracking online communication and interaction, sales for George Orwell's prophetic classic novel "1984" have spiked. On Amazon, it jumped to the 100th best selling title on the site from its previous spot of 11,855, and apparently the folks buying the story about a dystopian future in which Big Brother controls almost every fact of life, engages in mind control and mass surveillance, really haven't read the book. Or missed the point.

remake, hu? With that group behind it, we will probably see a black winston smith and a transextual white lover and the whole thing transformed into a rap-opera. Yes-sir-ree, this has some serious potential to suck worse that that modern remake of romeo and Juliet.

Yup, I thought the very same thing. I got all excited, then read the Ron Howard part and it took the wind right out of my sails. Sure hope we are wrong.

Ron Howard is Richie Cunningham from Happy Days. I thought you might be kidding so I kidded more. Opie Taylor is also Ron Howard from the Andy Griffin Show.

I wasn't kidding, TV and movies haven't even registered on my radar since Mayberry/ Happy Days were new releases...

This might have an up-side...

Maybe we could petition the WH to have the egotist and chief play the leading roll. Anything to keep him busy till he's out of office!

You're probably better off for it. I usually stick to documentaries.

If were going to typecast, I say we have him play the role of....

O’Brien — the antagonist, a member of the Inner Party who deceives Winston and Julia that he is of the Brotherhood resistance. Here is a clip of the scene with O'Brien....

The very first line of the book is, "April 4, 1984." That is the exact day I lost my mom to cancer, aged 17. The book has always had meaning to me, the end of my childhood as I knew it...

Wow, that is profound.

Well, I was looking for some more opinions on the remake of the movie and found this. The guy seems to agree with the Ron Howard dislike. He also seems to know what he's talking about. His book sounds like a good read too....
