IN May 2010, I received a brown envelope. In it was a CD with an encrypted file containing six months of my life. Six months of metadata, stored by my cellphone provider, T-Mobile. This list of metadata contained 35,830 records. That’s 35,830 times my phone company knew if, where and when I was surfing the Web, calling or texting.

In Germany, whenever the government begins to infringe on individual freedom, society stands up. Given our history, we Germans are not willing to trade in our liberty for potentially better security. Germans have experienced firsthand what happens when the government knows too much about someone. In the past 80 years, Germans have felt the betrayal of neighbors who informed for the Gestapo and the fear that best friends might be potential informants for the Stasi. Homes were tapped. Millions were monitored.

Although these two dictatorships, Nazi and Communist, are gone and we now live in a unified and stable democracy, we have not forgotten what happens when secret police or intelligence agencies disregard privacy. It is an integral part of our history and gives young and old alike a critical perspective on state surveillance systems.

I understand that Germany has quite a bit more social liberty, but what about economic liberty? And what about the fact that no German seems willing to question the red man on the street corner at night when no cars are coming? It's somewhat disturbing to me, being mostly of German ancestry.

Germany has always had a state run economy. As far as state run economies go Germany has one of the best and the very best under Hitler. Hence the economic miracle. That said the problem is that it offers too much wealth for the common wealth not enough wealth for the individual.

And tens of millions died.

Too bad most of my fellow Americunts are too stupid to see this.

Millions will die here, before this is all over.

Mark my words, it is what tyrannical governments do.

And we are in a full blown, "hot" tyranny, make no mistake.

This isn't an international pissing contest. Put your exceptionalism away.

They may want to take a closer look. I'm sure they have a central bank that allows for some to counterfeit their money supply to fund a stealth, socialist underground economy. It may have not sucked them dry yet but it sure seems to be doing in the other so called democracies, globally.

And that is why I think that the private ownership of guns and ammo must be a hard line that they cannot cross and that, hopefully, millions would be willing to die for if push came to shove.

German Liberty? They regulate individual life to no end. Don't even have the liberty of naming your children what you want unless approved by the Standesamt.

LOL! Hey Germany, I have a secret for you...

You have a Communist at the top of your government. AND... DDR Merkel pushes the Leninist-Marxist-Communist agenda every chance. Merkel ensured a well planned Barry Seotoro propaganda event aka 'The Hangover PART 4 'Barry's Brandenberg Gate'

Germans must be delusional if they think forced public schooling is part of a free society:

We need a world wide awakening.

All I know about German history I learned from Quintin Tarantino...He also taught me about slavery. He's a genius.

Its not just the Ameritwats. If this attitude of complacency continues, it very well could be the entire world in Tyranny. Im sure the Banksters want nothing less than that.

Slaves overwhelmingly revere their chains and rationalize them as "free enough".
