No! Do not say you need a "lawyer" or an "attorney" ever to the police. Say you wish to speak to counsel. There is a BIG difference. Read the 6th amendment's right to "assistance of counsel." Nowhere does it say anyone has the right to be represented by an attorney. When you allow yourself to be "represented" you are considered non compos mentis (http://thelawdictionary.org/non-compos-mentis/) by the court. That it why you can't object when you're on trial.

And never say you are "representing" yourself. How can you "represent" yourself when you are there in court in person prepared and ready to defend yourself.

And lastly, never say you "understand" anything. You may comprehend things, you do not understand or stand under anything.
