By Inaudible, Mumbling Witness In Zimmerman Trial

MSNBC’s expert John McWhorter, a Columbia University linguist, explains that a star witness for the prosecution in the George Zimmerman trial, Rachel Jeantel, was abused by defense attorneys who simply didn’t understand her dialect.
McWhorter explained: “It’s been a little scary. Sometimes it’s like she’s speaking Hungarian, and he’s speaking Cantonese. She’s been articulate, just in a different kind of English than mainstream English, she’s speaking Black English. Everything she says, where you can see the Twittersphere, or people I know thinking she’s making a grammatical mistake. If a Martian came down and the Martian happened to be in South-Central rather than in Grand Rapids, the Martian would have as hard a time figuring out how this dialect worked as any other. She said in the clip that ‘I had told you.’ Many people are thinking, ‘why is she using that?’ That’s Black English.”

Haven't listened, don't care.

If the attorney driving this broad can't get her to speak plain English it's his fault.

Fuck a bunch of excuses and justification.

Black English? This is supposed to be some renowned linguist? Lol. You can't fault the attorney's for the lack of education/intelligence on the part of the person on the bench.

The grammatical rules of English aren't up to the whim of the person speaking, otherwise, you aren't speaking English anymore, but some bastardized something or other language that no one outside your smallish clique understands what the fuck you are talking about.

What? I don't even...

It's clear the girl is a bit slow with her English and ability to properly articulate. It has nothing to do with her being black, I would first look at her level of education and location. Yeah, some people speak using slang, all colors of the rainbow. But with this particular girl, it's very apparent that she's just not very articulate.

There are a number of English dialects in the old Colonies. America has several. Australia and Jamaica both have notable ones.

London had several dialects that were unintelligible to people from other districts.

Anybody can hoot and grunt and get a simple point across.

The point of civilized language is to convey complex thoughts and abstract ideas and detailed instructions.

Thank you!

We have southern accents, Brooklyn accents, mid-west accents, and so forth. People in the mid-west say TORE instead of tour, etc.

Most here would never understand Cockney.

That's racist.....;)

The prosecutor knew, for what, over a year, that this fine young lady would be taking the witness stand...

Given that the upstanding public servant spent all that time preparing his witness, under close media scrutiny, it's obvious the testimony in question is the very best one can hope for..

Id have to disagree with that one. I've identified 7 accents in Oklahoma alone. Texas, I have no idea. They are numerous. And those are only the states I'm in frequently enough to tease out the differences. Accents will be with us for a long time to come. They are formed by the time a speaker is two or three years old, thus the immediate family is the primary driver of them. Until the state mandates all our kids go to 24/7 day care at birth for "education" purposes, we will have accents for the foreseeable future.

John McWorter's pretty good on politics and race as well as linguistics. I haven't listened to the testimony. But he's probably right.

That doesn't make the prosecution less stupid for thinking she wouldn't hurt them.

I am mentoring 7 college age young men doing summer "intern" programs.

1 is from Corpus Christi.
1 is from Sea/Tac
1 is from Rhode Island.
1 is from California.
1 is from Maine.
1 is from Houston.
1 is from Ohio.

I can discern no telling accent whatsoever.

Every one of them sounds alike.

Maybe I'm just old and my tin ear has shit the bed, but I can't tell any difference.

Australian English contracts every word to two syllables.

"My Mate Jacko, you know, the weirdo journo from freeo, he slept on a bit of lino during his smoko one arvo, and ended up on compo in a real dearo"

Its English... but damn.

The interesting thing about American English is that changed modern English to be much more classless. So to see Americans picking people apart by class because of language is a bit sad really.

Nearly all English speakers world wide have some amount of Black English in their vocabulary now. Largely because of music.
