http://slashdot.org/submission/2763613/should-you-ask-for-your-fbi-file
"Sites such as Get My FBI File http://www.getmyfbifile.com/ make it easy to get your FBI File ? if one exists ? and dossiers from DSS, CIA, DIA, USMS, USSS, CID and other locations. The cost to ask is typically a 46 cent stamp.
But is it worth asking? Most people don't have files. Your odds of having a file are certainly greater if you are older, and/or if you engaged in political organizing or protest activities, or if you were the subject of a background check or clearance. And the FBI is busy destroying a lot of their older files. The oft-repeated idea that asking about files concerning you at government agencies leads to the creation of a file is an urban myth, and makes little sense when you think about it a bit.
Why was NSA omitted? NSA used to be on the form. However, NSA has a standard policy of declining to search for information about individuals. Period. Apart from the internet/email/telephone data collection, NSA has long maintained huge collections of data for which a search of the requisite indices would be likely to turn up references to an individual. But as noted above, NSA had adopted a policy of refusing to search for relevant records. So there didn't seem to be any point to including NSA as an option on the form letter.
Privacy concerns? While the GMFF site does ask for some personal information for the sole purpose of creating the letter, if you are concerned about that, you can leave those blank and just print out the form letter with blanks to fill in yourself with a pen. That seems like a prudent precaution.
What may be more interesting and important, ultimately, is the sister site, Get Grandpas FBI File http://www.getgrandpasfbifile.com/ , which provides the same fill-in-the-blank service for your Grandpa, or any deceased relative, or any deceased person. This includes notable individuals. Or companies. Or organizations. A very sizable percentage of notable figures who lived during the 20th Century had FBI Files."

I've known the guy that runs this site for over a decade. He's run the site for a long time. It's legit. He could use a few votes up on slashdot right now. If anyone has an accnt...

thanks,

TY! I want to get my dad's too. He was being followed by the feds back during the Nixon admin. for the colorful letters he wrote to him over his expansion of the GD Vietnam war. He called the agents out in the street and started screaming obscenities at them. Heh. Those must have been some letters.

Anyone can packet sniff. You would be just giving your info away. Giving the context of the site I would check in/out IPS while you're connected.

peerblock will tell you who they are.

Maybe it is worth trying.

Swartz found out this week when he got his FBI file through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Slashdot seems to have the post flagged as spam. But on your endorsement, I voted it up anyway. Good luck!

The fine print: Our attorneys told us to tell you that this site is for informational and entertainment purposes and is not meant to provide legal advice. If you have any questions about your legal right to FBI files, you may wish to consult an attorney. (Hmm, attorneys suggesting you contact an attorney, who could have predicted?)

LOL.
