Today Campaign for Liberty Chairman Ron Paul made the following comment regarding the indictment of Edward Snowden’s indictment for espionage. The statement was posted on Dr. Paul’s Facebook page:

My understanding is that espionage means giving secret or classified information to the enemy. Since Snowden shared information with the American people, his indictment for espionage could reveal (or confirm) that the US Government views you and me as the enemy.

Espionage under its classical definition is spying to collect protected useful information. Espionage under US law also includes sharing that information with anyone not authorized to have it. Neither definition has anything specific to do with "enemies".
