Apparently the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, has been living under a rock for the last couple weeks. Yesterday she made the claim that the federal government does not depend on the private sector for security and intelligence operations. Ummm has she completely missed the last two weeks where we all found out that is a complete lie?

Napolitano’s speech at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars was supposed to be one that highlighted the importance of public-private sector partnerships in helping cybersecurity. She said,

“It’s very interesting in this area, this is going to be at this point an experiment and an important one, because where security is concerned — law enforcement or security — we normally don’t depend on the private sector. We really view that as an inherently governmental function.”

“We don’t depend, or outsource, our national defense to the private sector. We don’t depend or outsource our intelligence gathering capability to the private sector.”

In her keynote address Napolitano obviously forgot that we all know the NSA has been partnering with private industry for quite some time now in order to watch American citizens. It is pretty painful to have someone in charge of homeland security that has absolutely no experience in law enforcement or military. Does she not remember that we are all also aware of the fact that we use government contracted companies to aid in our military battles?

Eisenhower first warned the country in 1961 about the establishment of the military-industrial complex that had arisen out of necessity following World War II and the Korean War.

Obviously there is a big disconnect between Secretary Napolitano and the real world. Can someone please inform her that she doesn’t have to keep covering up the NSA thing? It’s over. We know what you guys are doing over there! Don’t forget this woman makes nearly $200,000 each year for this great work she is doing…

It always does to an extent. If people don't want to believe something they will except any lie thrown out there and consider it gospel.

This tale is sort of like Bin Laden, they dug it up and leaked it again.

Obviously. I wouldn't expect a bureaucrat to agree with a philosophy that contravenes their very existence. This is why minarchism, while helpful in the short run (we're a long way from the minarchist ideal), is inconsistent and ultimately harmful to the arrival of a free society.

A stateless society won't fly unless and until smaller constitutional govt can prove itself again. And it's minarchists that will help get to that level and I will do my part in that game to help them out as it's ultimately in my personal best interest.

A stateless society won't fly until a far greater number of people reject the notion that law enforcement and defense services are inherently government functions. Minarchists are allied with socialists and communists in that regard, and stripping the state down to nothing but a minarchist utopia will do nothing to change this. If someone can accept that law enforcement and defense services can and should be supplied by the marketplace, welfare, subsidies, and even those beloved and deified roads are a cakewalk.

Long story short, we need to start harping on police and the military as being socialistic, parasitic drains on society to conservatives who view the welfare state in a negative fashion. Ask them to speak about the Post Office for a while, then join in on the bashing and decry the military for being purely socialistic, as opposed to the Post Office, which is at least partly governed and funded by market forces.
