Turtle Creek, PA —A Turtle Creek woman recorded police, when they came to her door, demanded she show identification then followed her inside.
"I didn't want to tell them anything," Robyn Ruckman said.
Police from Turtle Creek, The Housing Authority and East Pittsburgh showed up at Ruckman's door, looking for her landlord. They had a warrant for Roben Edwards for Failure to Maintain property.
Ruckman recorded the officers as they told her to get her ID. She can be seen closing the door and asking the officers if they can wait outside. On the video, you hear one officer respond "No, I can't wait here because I think you're trying to avoid us." The officer goes on to say they are serving a warrant and have a right to be there.
East Pittsburgh Police Chief Lori Payne said officers never allow someone to go back inside alone.
"Shame on us if they come back with a shotgun," Payne said.
Duquesne Law Professer Wesley Oliver said "They could have defused the level of animosity in the situation had they been a little more polite. Officers can be very authoritative, while being polite. The two are not inconsistent"
The warrant for Ruckman's landlord was served during a 12 hour roundup in Turtle Creek and surrounding communities. District Justice Scott Schricker said the round up helped them clear more than one hundred warrants.
After Ruckmans encounter with police, Schricker said Edwards scheduled a hearing for charges involving her uncut grass.

""I didn't want to tell them anything," Robyn Ruckman said."
Well if you want to remain silent you've got to SPEAK UP according to some brainy Supreme Court jurors.
It's your right?
More lovelies breaking up a party and then the judge dismissing every arrest made.

Yes, they want the gubmint freebies without the heavy regulations. Total disconnect of reality, there.

not everyone is harmless. Someone might close the door to get their gun and blast away the cops. That's also why if your hands aren't visible when you're pulled over they're going to keep their hand on their gun.

Funny how there's always commenters who seek to minimize the victim. "Shame on her!"

By all means, barge into her home then. Oh, and while you're at it talk to her like she's a lowly piece of shit.

In all fairness, if you watch the video her main gripe appears to be that they "have the wrong person" and that they came inside, not "this is ridiculous they should not have followed me into the house."

Incidentally, shame on the police for saying "my uniform says Police" as if it's good enough. Go ahead and Google how many people are harmed not only by police, but by people PRETENDING to be police or some other authority figure.

I'm not saying that they should have allowed her to go back into the house, but the choice was theirs - either let her get her ID or deal with the fact that she didn'r bring her wallet with her.

Wow... a warrant for an ordinance violation. My guess is she missed court for the ordinance violation and this was a bench warrant. In my state, ordinance violations are not codified state infractions. All they can do is issue a ticket from the city court. It wouldn't be a state court issuing the summons.
Still, what kind of world do we live in where the state can tell you what you can do on your property—all the while—force you to pay property taxes (rent) and kick you out if they see a public use for 'your' land (eminent domain).

Shame on her for answering the door.
Shame on us for allowing this once semi free nation to devolve into a police state, where citizens have to cower behind locked doors hoping and praying that they do not get blown up or cut to ribbons by automatic weapons fire for failing to comply with lawn mowing regulations.

All dogs can and will bite if pushed far enough. What makes the difference is giving them a reason to bite you or not. Our Govt is trying to provoke as many of us as possible become violent.

Who is this "us" you speak of? Even if we stormed city halls and demanded a stop to the madness long ago, it wouldn't have changed anything. Power does what it wants, whenever the fuck it wants.

This is why you should never open your door for a cop -- nothing good can possibly come from it . If it's a serious enough matter, they'll just kick the door down anyway. Well, now they can do it just because they feel like doing so, search warrant or not, but it's not likely.

They don't do this anymore in my state... unlawful entry by police is not protected and may result in legal use of force by the homeowner.

Oh, I'm sure that's true in theory. In reality, you do that and you will either be summarily executed on the spot by the other "brothers" in the gang, or the DA will pile up a ton of other charges if you do survive.

You would hope they use common sense as a police officer. If the arrest was for a violent crime then id understand but for uncut grass?I highly doubt shes going to pull a gun over cut grass.Even being arrested .i couldn't imagine time served being more than a week.Defiantly not worth pulling a gun out over.Though if you live life paranoid that everyone is a potential bad guy or terrorist then i guess you have no room for sound judgement but instead treat everyone as a possible crazed lunatic just waiting to explode.

Perhaps I have seen too many authoritarian pigs in my day but my heart would hardly weep.
RIP Tupac.
Not everyone is harmless indeed. Look at those pigs bullying that poor woman. Hardly harmless. The emotional stress and fear of having armed thugs with qualified immunity banging on your door. That is not a victimless crime.

This video is kind of old btw. (two to three months, I believe) It has been posted before. I'm glad to see it brought back up again though.
I didn't listen to the video to see if anything came from this incident, consequences to the officers that is. I would bet a dollar to a hundred nothing did though. Nothing substantial, anyways.

They gained all this power while we were sleeping.
More like the dangled carrots for those that came before, and the future pays for their covetousness.
They didn't gain power, they were granted it. It may have been a slow process, but it was incessant. No person has the time to fight the process, we have mouths to feed and feet to shoe. Those that have those things not only in spades, but in abundance that make people shake their heads have the time to contrive such figments as this. The carrot is comfort, the future is unborne.

Does self-defense become wrong because your kidnapper promises to release you in a week?

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
So they did have a warrant with a name and address? Would they have shown it to her if she asked?

I'd like to know how often that happens. Police come to the door, the person answers and talks to them, and then grabs a gun and "blasts away". We would probably need just the raw numbers, as an accurate percentage would be impossible. No way to know how many times Police knock on doors.

Even if it has never happened, it COULD happen. Just like a cell phone or camera *could* be a gun. Anything and everything can be justified based on "what if ... ?"
"Officer safety" knows no bounds ...

These "isolated incidents" are becoming so common it's hard to keep them all straight. And just think, we probably don't even hear about 98% of them ...

I've seen this one before. If it occurred on May 29th I must have saw it pretty much the next day because it has been a little while.
Either way, it's good to see it again, that people haven't forgotten and that you should record all encounters with the police. No one would have believe her complaints had she not had video.

If the Mayor backs that kind of rudeness from publics servants, then it's up to the people to vote him out.
