The British spy agency GCHQ has access to the global network of communications, storing calls, Facebook posts and internet histories – and shares this data with the NSA, Edward Snowden has revealed to the Guardian in a new leak.

GCHQ’s network of cables is able to process massive quantities of information from both specific targets and completely innocent people, including recording phone calls and reading email messages, it was revealed on Friday.

"It's not just a US problem. The UK has a huge dog in this fight," Snowden told the Guardian. "They [GCHQ] are worse than the US." more if you click

For secret access to world's communications

Britain's spy agency GCHQ has secretly gained access to the network of cables which carry the world's phone calls and internet traffic and has started to process vast streams of sensitive personal information which it is sharing with its American partner, the National Security Agency (NSA).

The sheer scale of the agency's ambition is reflected in the titles of its two principal components: Mastering the Internet and Global Telecoms Exploitation, aimed at scooping up as much online and telephone traffic as possible. This is all being carried out without any form of public acknowledgement or debate.

One key innovation has been GCHQ's ability to tap into and store huge volumes of data drawn from fibre-optic cables for up to 30 days so that it can be sifted and analysed. That operation, codenamed Tempora, has been running for some 18 months.

GCHQ and the NSA are consequently able to access and process vast quantities of communications between entirely innocent people, as well as targeted suspects.

This includes recordings of phone calls, the content of email messages, entries on Facebook and the history of any internet user's access to websites – all of which is deemed legal, even though the warrant system was supposed to limit interception to a specified range of targets.

The existence of the programme has been disclosed in documents shown to the Guardian by the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden as part of his attempt to expose what he has called "the largest programme of suspicionless surveillance in human history".

One does have to wonder if Menwith is a very modern elephant cage.

The radomes sit atop an industrial sized elevator with blast doors. The actual dish looks more like a vagina than than what you think of as a sat dish. The geodesic covering is to protect it from weather and so you can't tell what it's looking at. These things are made to take a (thermonuclear) licking and keep on ticking!

They are supported by constellations of sats that push messages around in orbit.

Naa I'd rather he shit or get off the pot. Let some REAL dirt fly. No more of this thinly reported stuff from 6 months ago. Was the NSA super compound really a surprise to anyone in the last few months? It's been well documented already.

Steady drips is what chinese water torture is. "Little" drips feel like bigger drips but they actually aren't, and if the receiver doesn't respond to the steady drips then he dies.

General Alexander (another hopelessly stubborn and ignorant US general) visited Menwith Hill and said "why can't we collect it all, sounds like a good idea". Of course he says something else to Congress.

Lying liars, all of them.

RAF Menwith Hill is not officially an NSA facility it is a UK airforce base under the command of a puppet RAF officer and "operated" by up to 1200 American NSA staff.

So when General Alexander - another lying General - tells Mike Rogers that NSA can't flip a switch and listen in on calls or emails without a warrant he's lying because they can do this via Menwith Hill.

Snowden's leak says they keep a recording of EVERY PHONE CALL for 3 days, possibly up to 30 days before wiping it

since ole NATO went into overdrive,
the Brits have been obviously not
in total "braindrain" mode globally?
can we think of decades of "intel"
gleemed unspokenly quietly thusly?

had the nsa ever obliterated
or 'wiped' anything I wonder?
I assumed it was an exponentially
expanding archive only recently
into intel via its new field agents.
