View Full Version : Should we pass out copies of 1984 in the street to take advantage of this NSA situation?

Can't really afford to do it myself but it would probably be a good idea for most Americans to read it now and draw the connection.

I like it and have made the suggestion before but sadly we have to face the facts that most Americans would not even understand half the words in the book.

One of the few things I agree with Barack on.

At $7 a copy, it's an impractical handout unless you are giving them to a library, but most libraries already have copies.

I like the audio book idea. The full text is also online as are a couple of "cliff notes" type versions. To entice someone to listen to or read it, you need a good hook. The best one I've seen is:

1984 was supposed to be a warning against tyranny, not an instruction manual.

Along with some sort of eye catching graphic.

Then you have tinyurl's and QR codes. Unfortunately, most smart phones don't have a app to read them by default (though this may have changed). It also suffers as only part of the population is in the habit of scanning them:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/ilyapozin/2012/03/08/are-qr-codes-dead/

"In June 2011, 14 million U.S. smartphone users scanned a QR code. Impressive, right? Not so much when you look at the fact that, at the end of July, 82.2 million Americans owned smartphones. That’s only 17 percent of smartphone users scanning a QR code. But how many actually used QR codes on a regular basis? How many have actually scanned more than once? How many still have the app on their phone that lets them scan the code?"

Still, with AVERY full sheet sticker paper, you should be able to kick out these messages at 5-10 cents a copy, which makes them vary affordable.

They apparently have an issue when being read in full sunlight, however...

or maybe handouts with prominent quotes on it from the book, which are very relevant right now.
of course the whole book is great, but i wonder if the ADHD generation would have the time to read it and the brain to understand it !

How about the DVD? Wasn't there a movie version?

I personally have been considering wheatpasting "THE NSA IS WATCHING YOU" posters everywhere, with the menacing eyes.

I Was at Barnes & Noble the other day, and took a look at the "Summer Reading" table. These books are required reading for area middle and high schools as submitted by teachers. I was shocked to find that ALL the dystopian classics were there.... 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Clockwork Orange, Fahrenheit 451, as well as many others. It was awesome, as maybe some teachers are starting to get worried. ;)

I was thinking about making some signs to the effect of 'if you are truly not worried about the NSA spying on you, stop and let me look through your phone' then asking passersby if I can look through their phone, ya know 'cause if you aren't doing anything wrong...'.

I know of one, but they went way out of their way to make it both completely alien, lest someone see themselves in it, and completely boring. So, it's worthless.

Yeah, 1984 would be a waste on many. Animal Farm, on the other hand, could be an excellent investment.
