I know everyone here isn't a Chomski fan, but he gets it right here. Maybe forward this on to your Chomski fan acquaintances.

"Governments should not have this capacity. But governments will use whatever technology is available to them to combat their primary enemy – which is their own population," he told the Guardian.

Noam is authentic even if I do believe he belongs with liberty.

I wouldn't expect any less from Chomsky on this issue. I respect quite a bit of his work.

I'm sure he's sincere, but he probably thinks free-market principles are more dangerous to society than government spying.

At least he supports freedom of speech, right to due process and he's against a lot of the wars.

i respect the guy but unfortunately chomsky's solution to overbearing, oppressive government is...more government

The NSA is used to allow the; robbing, invading, overthrowing, raping, stealing conquering of other country's lands/resources/governments, around the world. NSA violates US Constitutional Rights, so as the criminals within the Washington DC beltway are protected and can sell you out for there own conquests and enrichments.

It's always about the 'best interests of the US government', money interests, & politicians... NOT the US taxpayers, US citizens or Country.

This.

Unless he's had some sort of epiphany.

When in agreement with someone on such an important matter, particularly one in heated current debate, I don't understand why so many peoples' gut reaction is to point out a bunch of disagreements.

The truth is this... when you're talking to people, you're sometimes going to get a lot more mileage out of appealing to one of their authorities than taking them through a bunch of philosophical arguments. Most people lack the attention span or mental faculty for that, and it's a large waste of time when you could just point at Chomsky and pull them to your side on the issue.

(at everyone or anyone...) Would you rather someone agree with you on nothing? Or nothing except this issue?

Mainstream liberals don't know or care who Chomsky is. When confronted with the horrific performance of their Poster Child, the answer is always..."Yes I know, but it would be so much worse if the Republicans were in charge." Kool-Aid is a summertime treat!

So, then what is your method of engaging people and changing their minds?

By directing folks thought process by asking questions. I'm not trying to change minds....I'm trying to educate, and identify the opposition's motivations. Some people are willfully ignorant and unreachable.

Every time I've read a Chomsky piece he's speaking out against the state.

This. I'm sure his beef is that it all went public.
My guess is he didn't shed a year over the IRS targeting tea party groups.

Noam is certainly correct on this issue and I am glad he is getting press for his comments.

Unfortunately he is a mixed bag with some really stupid shit, such as this audio where he completely misstates libertarianism in the U.S. as I know it to be (1:17 mark). When he says that here libertarian means "Extreme advocate of total tyranny" Noam is completely out of touch with my world of libertarian, and if we aren't in touch with what it means to be libertarian, I don't know who is.

In the world I live in, we libertarians are the ones fighting hardest against tyranny. Meanwhile we have socialist Democrats running around pretending to stand against corporations like Bank of America, while arguing that we need to bailout Wall St banks at taxpayer expense.

Fair enough, but I like to carry a full toolbox around. If educating doesn't change anyone's mind, maybe we differ on what that term means.

I dont really care who it is if they are speaking truth. Every side should speak out against tyranny.

I agree. Though I do believe this only applies to authorities who are genuine in their belief (like Chom). I wouldnt ever use Beck as an authority for example, no matter how much he claimed to agree with us

Well, that would surely make me feel like a douche, but part of referencing an authority figure for someone is so they aren't dismissing discussion entirely, or will at least begin to consider a position that they wouldn't have before. But I guess if Beck is right about something and it stops someone from putting their fingers in their ears, I suppose I wouldn't be above that. The same person may be open to criticism of Beck if there are future discussions, as I believe part of the mechanism here can be authority transfer. It's surely not a "Look, we both worship Beck..." kind of strategy.
