View Full Version : TSA tells 15yearold to "cover up" for wearing unapproved clothes before being screened

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA)* is investigating a report that one of its officers allegedly humiliated a 15-year-old girl wearing leggings, a tank top, and a button-down, telling her she should cover up as she went through an ID-check line in the Los Angeles Airport Sunday.*

“She said the officer was ‘glaring’ at her and mumbling. She said, ‘Excuse me?’ and he said, ‘You're only 15, cover yourself!’ in a hostile tone,” the girl's father, Mark Frauenfelder, told Yahoo! Shine, echoing what he had written in a Boing Boing blog post describing the incident. “It shook her up," he added.

Frauenfelder, who is editor in chief of Make magazine and the founder of Boing Boing, told Shine that his daughter, Sarina, was with a group of high school peers, on their way to visit colleges. He said that she began a rapid-fire series of texts to him and his wife by declaring, "I'm furious!" and adding, about the TSA officer, "He was so rude and hostile. He made me feel like a slut."

Different strokes for different folks. I detest it and agree with TSA guy. Leggings as pants are trashy imo and she is dressing like this for attention. She just got negative attention and now will whine about it so she heaps up tons of sympathy. Parents should teach her that not everyone is going to embrace her choices and some are going to offer unsolicited opinions. My guess is they will instead teach her how to exact revenge and she will go to even greater lengths to "liberate" women through trashy clothes choices.

FFS, whatever happened to keeping opinions to yourself and shutting the fuck up? Telling complete strangers you disapprove of their dress to their face? It used to be you'd get a fat lip for offering unsolicited 'advice' of that nature. But now all the nanny's out there have taken a hint from our nanny police state and can't keep their nose out of other people's lives.

Do you think if she weighed 300-400 lbs she would have worn something this revealing at this age? Do you think she might have chosen to button the long sleeve shirt up some even if she chose the same clothes for comfort? Did she have the comments coming? Well if her parents would have been realistic with her they would have informed her that she might get unsolicited advice when wearing things formally meant to be worn as a layer under other clothing. Instead of getting offended then she would have had a sharp comeback. Instead of seething she would be smirking. She got her feelings hurt because she has been insolated from others who kept their tongue and probably not everyone thought the choice was a wise one.

As for nanny crap you are espousing, I could care less what one wears in their own home. I also don't go up to strangers when I see them dressed in what I find offensive but I understand the frustration of those who do. When in public you are exposing yourself to others. Don't be surprised when some don't want to see what you want to share and might tell you so. Just like the guy fashion of underwear hanging out, leggings were not meant to be a replacement for pants. Betcha some would have a different opinion if she wasn't a petite girl but instead quite rotund. (people of Walmart pics come to mind here)

Like many who appreciate modesty I don't go out of my way to get offended. It just would be nice if others had some respect for the people in the general public that are assaulted with their clothing choices. I also dislike barefeet in the grocery store, people who pick their noses in public, and folks who take their dog to Home Depot. Again different strokes for different folks. Doesn't mean I am going to demand laws for it but I sure have an opinion and you might hear me mumble about if I see it in public on a particular day. I do not go up and get in folks face about it and think the TSA guy was wrong to do so in official service. I am getting used to folks in NE Ohio though who have no problem letting their opinion fly so it wouldn't surprise me like it did when I first moved here. Southerners just don't let it fly like they do here.:) And I suppose that has contributed to making me a mumbler as I am now which I never used to be. Its part of my spiritual beliefs to be modest and for now I am thankful for the fact full nudity is not a socially acceptable practice in the marketplace. When or if it becomes so I guess I will go full on hermit...

Modesty is in the eye of the beholder. Some might say that those "modesty suits" show too much leg and should cover to the ankle. And good luck in Ohio. Many family members there and, no, they don't hold back. We are more subtle in the south. A simple "Bless his/her heart" and the unspoken is recognized. Lol.

I don't see a problem. She was wearing footwear, a shirt, and pants. That's all you need. Who cares if she's wearing leggings instead of something more conservative like blue jeans... at least she was wearing pants! Most policies say shirts, shoes, and pants.

It's not up to the TSA screener (who is not a certified law enforcement officer) to tell you what kind of clothes you can wear. So long as your wearing a shirt, pants, and shoes of some kind, that's all they can tell you.

The entire story seems a bit contrived for the father and his Boing Boing blog to get publicity.

Frauenfelder posted a photo of his daughter in the outfit she had on during the incident and wrote, “It doesn't matter what she was wearing, though, because it's none of his business to tell girls what they should or should not wear. His creepy thoughts are his own problem, and he shouldn't use his position of authority as an excuse to humiliate a girl and blame her for his sick attitude.”

And there the father goes into hypocritical territory. If his daughter wants to wear something that brings attention, they can not then turn around and complain about people noticing, for better or for worse. Sure the TSA guy is out of line (not within his job duties), but note that his "thoughts" are now creepy too.

This instance isn't so bad really, even though those leggings do show every curve they cling to, but I do understand the frustration of this TSA agent. (well on a personal level anyway, if he's that concerned the TSA is the last place he should be working) I used to work in a mall at one of our kiosks, and I've never been a prude or anything but what girls would wear out there would have me uncomfortable even looking up from my counter. After a while I was still uncomfortable, but it more often than not just made me disgusted that their parents would let them out of the house looking like that.

I realize that every generation can say that about the next, and has, but at some point fashion has 'jumped the shark' and it really is getting to be too much.

Overreaction on her part-

The only reason this is news is because the guy was TSA. Most of them are goons- but sounds like this guy was just being a father type- even though it wasn't his business.

The girl's top is too low, her belly is showing and her leggings are skin-tight. She's got herself in place in the picture but one move and the boobs are hanging out and the belly button and butt crack are flashing for all to see.

Like I said- not his business, but hey- welcome to today's fashions.

I wore leggings like those so I could run in the winter, it was pretty common in track & field/cross country. I am hardly a fan of most anything skin-tight as regular clothes, but don't their heads explode when/if they watch any sort of sports?

Looking at that outfit, the only thing my rather conservative father would have said is that the jacket looks sloppy and you need to wear a longer shirt.

Just personal preference, but I find women who dress more moderately (aka normal dress) more attractive. Showing your ass, legs, and tits is a cheap shortcut for having good taste in clothing. Save it for the beach

Something like sports or gymnastics or something of that sort, it's expected dress. But lemme tell ya, day after day of seeing preteen and teen girls wear vacuum sealed yoga pants/tights while shopping at the mall gets very bothersome. Especially when they revel in the types of attention they get from all ages of guys around them. Yes, I realize that kids want to act out and garner themselves attention, but IMO they can still have a little self respect.

I just want to point out that 19th century prostitutes dressed more modestly then 21st century middle school girls, just saying.

It's improper for Agents of The State to offer any opinion towards a person's manner of dress.

If you don't like how someone is dressed in your range of vision, turn your head in a different direction.

What happens when the only safe direction is straight down?

Wear nice shoes.

Maybe I don't understand; does (un)attractiveness of dress violate your rights somehow?

Styles Change..

When I was in School,, Miniskirts were "in". As in Common dress for girls of that age..
In the Keys,, shorts and tank tops (sans bra) are common.. even in school.
Sadly, the gauze sundresses have gone out of style.

To some folks,, anything other than ankle length dresses, button up collars, and drab colors are provocative.

Bottom line,, it ain't any of his business.. If he doesn't want to see it he needs to get out of the public space.
And certainly out of public employment.

I'm really surprised to see so many people defending the TSA person.. He is in no position to judge what anyone is wearing. As a public employee, in a public place, he should accept that other people wear different styles of clothes and ANYTHING less than total respect and courtesy is unacceptable.

He should be fired.

In regards to the dress, that is pretty normal looking for what the high school girls are wearing these days. Am I going to let my daughter dress like that? Hell no, but if went around telling other people's teenaged daughters what to wear then I should expect a prompt kick in the ass by another angry father.

If you don't like seeing what people choose to wear in public, dont go out in public.

That is some really conservative attire for so cal.

And if you're at LAX it's not like you can't go two blocks down to the beach and look at girls of any age in a bikini.

I don't care what she's wearing, it's still stupid for someone to tell her to cover up shortly before she goes through a process that may involve a woman twice or thrice her age running her hands all over the girl's body.

Cover up so we can grope you, you wanton slut!

Came right back to this, actually.

The TSA is largely to blame for people dressing like this at the airport. When I was younger --- which was not THAT long ago, thanks --- you dressed up to go on a plane. It was an occasion. There were relatives you might not have seen in a long time waiting for you at the gate. I had to endure flights in a number of itchy, godawful dresses, and as we began our descent my mother would double check hair, clothes, shoes, etc., to make sure we were ready to make a great impression.

Can't wear a dress now: it presents issues when they try to grope you.
Can't really wear dress shoes: they are more difficult to take off and may leave you in stocking feet. Ripped hose/stockings are not good, especially if they're only getting worse the whole flight.
Can't meet your family at the gate anyhow: that ended what seems like ages ago.

So the general consensus seems to have become that you go to the airport in flipflops and pajamas, or clothing that seems remarkably similar to it.

Ah, Melissa noticed the elephant in the room fart, but some of you appear to have gas masks on....

She was on her way through one of the most intrusive, SEXUALLY assaultive pat down OR nekkid scan process in the world - and some here are calling what she wears trashy, lol.

Some of you would have a stroke by seeing what walks around here in EVERY store, down EVERY road, whether traversing to/fro bars or the beach or just washing their cars in their driveways. You would get laughed at or knocked the fuck out for suggesting anyone cover up here in PCB, Florida, lol.

What this young woman was wearing is not offensive by any stretch* of the imagination...speaking of which, maybe if some of you weren't so perverted* while using yours, you wouldn't be offended all of the time? This is akin to the wal-mart photo developing employee that calls CPS for innocent pictures of children taking a bath - this wasn't an issue, until they brought it up.;) I didn't think "Damn, I'd hit it" when I saw the picture...why did you?

If this criticism had come from a school bus driver, maybe it would have been appropriate. But a TSA agent? Let's not forget what his job is.

Those pants didn't strike me as those tacky tight yoga pants with "JUICY" written across the ass. Hell, she almost looked like she was going to go hiking.

Honestly she was better built than the woman in the pic. Shorter too. She looks exactly like her in the face.

Sucks because only my mom is ever going to believe me lol. (she took the pictures) I had them on my old computer but don't know what happened to them. Got lost in a folder somewhere and my computer crashed. Showed up to ninth grade homecoming with a girl on each arm. Best memory of my life.
