The bill is structured so that most of the immigrants will be low-skilled. These immigrants will compete with Americans in the low-skilled labor markets. The competition is most fierce in some of the industries in which blacks historically have been highly concentrated, such as construction, agriculture and service. Since the supply of low-skilled workers already exceeds the demand, the massive influx in low-skilled immigrants bodes ill for all such workers, but particularly black males. Evidence adduced before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights shows that immigration accounts for 40 percent of the 18-point percentage decline in black employment rates over the last several decades -- the bulk of the decline occurring among black males. That's hundreds of thousands of blacks thrown out of work; hundreds of thousands who can't support their families without taxpayer assistance.

The evidence adduced by the commission shows that not only does illegal immigration depress the employment levels of low-skilled Americans, it drives down the wages for available jobs. For example, an economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta estimated that as a result of the growth of undocumented workers, the annual earnings of actual documented workers in Georgia in 2007 were $960 lower than they were in 2000. In the leisure hospitality sectors of the economy, the wages were $1,520 lower.

A $960 annual decrease in wages may not seem like much to some members of Congress, but as President Obama observed when he signed the extension of the payroll tax cut in 2012, an extra $80 a month makes a big difference to many families. It means $80 more toward rent, groceries and the cost of gasoline. Besides, why should American workers suffer any decline in their wages because of illegal immigration?

Some of the low skilled workers who can't find jobs will go and get the skills necessary to compete for higher skilled jobs. Unfettered immigration hurts all workers and lowers wages across the board.

If competition is a good thing, then why is competition on workers be bad? The answer is welfare system and voting privileges makes it back. I say we only fix the work permit system and reduce welfare instead of giving anybody else path to citizenship

Well, the alternative is to let the guy with the medical degree from Universidad Guadelejara actually practice medicine here, and there ain't no way that's going to happen, especially when they can just fuck over a bunch of ghetto residents. So the physician from south of the border can just keep cutting grass.

If we had a minimal welfare state, we wouldn't have an illegal alien problem. We could theoretically have some form of quasi-open borders as well. But the New Deal and the plundering of the treasury has changed all that.

Any ideas to rid us of the welfare state as opposed to bringing in more low-skilled dependents?

Nah....he's saying that the welfare state is the reason we need to have more government to curtail illegal immigration.

Yes. Since we're talking hypothetically, let the States decide. It's not like we are not already paying for state government to do stuff. As with EVERY problem in America, anti-federalism is the solution.

Not a bad idea at face value, but what about the federal programs (SNAP, WIC, SCHIP, SS, Medicaid) that intersect in regard to children of illegal immigrants and themselves? This only works in a "10th amendment nullification then secession" scenario.

Well, we all know immigrants will work for less than native born Americans. This will simply displace what few working class Americans who still have jobs, then we'll have 100% enrollment in welfare.
Sounds like a good plan to me! :p

So instead of spending your energy pushing for 10th amendment nullification, you're choosing to push for more federal overreach.
What is in the water that otherone and I are drinking, that makes us able to see this painfully obvious conclusion?

Since pay is roughly 5 times that of work found in Mexico. I can't begrudge them for acting in their own self-interest. However, what boils my blood is the fact that we have these criminals in the Chamber of Commerce and in the corporate world that knowingly entice them to come here, completely cognizant that the American taxpayer will be largely paying for their health and legacy costs, when all is said and done. It is simply circumvention. There is no such thing as "cheap labor" in the entire macroeconomic outlook. Someone else is always paying, if you peel the layers away.

the supply of low-skilled workers already exceeds the demand

After all the cries of minimum wage and equal rights, it seems hypocritical to knowingly allow them to work for slave wages.

Actually, with the welfare state in place we should encourage illegal immigration instead of legal migration. Both work, but the former are less eligible for welfare programs and unable to vote for socialist policies.

Mind you if you really think we should limit the ability to migrate here to avoid creating potential votes for socialist policies or welfare babies, you should also support sterilizing everyone in the US. All those cute babies being born? Socialists-!

I've been running a regression analysis on the distribution of illegal aliens within the United states. If they were really here for the welfare you'd see them disproportionally located in states like New York, Massachusetts, or New York. The actual results? They're disproportionally located in red states like Texas, Utah, and North Carolina - hardly what you think of as welfare havens.

The OP is pretty funny.

I have a lot of black friends and I don't know one that works in construction, agriculture, or service- or that want to. My Hispanic friends work mostly in landscape, gardening, and housekeeping; they are also the hardest workers I know.

The answer is to get rid of entitlements and let people come. Working people add to the economy- they do not take away from it.
