actually if you look lynnf, some are actually solely hot-air, but many are a combination, the helium does a lot of the lifting and the hot air sections allow for buoyancy control

if you're talking about the ballonets, any heat involved is purely incidental due to sometimes being filled with exhaust from the engines - when engines are off, they are filled using electric motors, so no heat necessary. the steering action provided by the ballonets is provided by the air pressure against the helium bags, not by any heat.
