BEIRUT — A Syrian rebel group's April pledge of allegiance to al-Qaeda's replacement for Osama bin Laden suggests that the terrorist group's influence is not waning and that it may take a greater role in the Western-backed fight to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The pledge of allegiance by Syrian Jabhat al Nusra Front chief Abou Mohamad al-Joulani to al-Qaeda leader Sheik Ayman al-Zawahri was coupled with an announcement by the al-Qaeda affiliate in Iraq, the Islamic State of Iraq, that it would work with al Nusra as well.

Lebanese Sheik Omar Bakri, a Salafist who says states must be governed by Muslim religious law, says al-Qaeda has assisted al Nusra for some time.

"They provided them early on with technical, military and financial support , especially when it came to setting up networks of foreign jihadis who were brought into Syria," Bakri says. "There will certainly be greater coordination between the two groups."

My question is how can Obama give aid to any rebels if it helps al-Qaeda?

Nothing that has happened over the past 11.5 years has been about keeping us safe from al-Qaeda. In fact, I would say that any real terrorist attack would be seen as a plus to those in power, as it will only help to increase their control over us as we keep handing over our civil liberties to them with a smile. Why should this recent development be seen as a surprise?

It is called using their own words against them... THEY are the ones who said they did it, so why are THEY helping them?

IThe NSA has info on the websites everyone visits from the US and they know the Al Qaeda website. I am wondering why they cannot just monitor the people visiting said website or shut it down. These are the same guys that shut down gambling and child porn websites.

Me thinks Al Qaeda is controlled opposition, a big support for US authoritarians and unwanted killer to the muslim world. They are the no. 2 killer of muslims behind the US

Since we're going to help them in Syria can we stop the nonsense in Afghanistan and bring our troops home? Pick one already.

This is really good for some insights from a former TOP Pakistani General Hamid Gul (used to run the intelligence agenciy and had close links to the original Taliban).

Warlord in the 2nd post has translated the General's difficult to decipher talk and provided a partial transcript.

Remember how, when 9/11 happened, how Bush was saying that there was an international network of terrorists out to get us?

That certainly seems to be more true now that It was then.

Didn't they already give the rebels $100 million?

They should buy a few used 747s, worked well last time.

Obama is giving them military aid as of yesterday. No Congressional approval requested, but McCain thinks it should have happened earlier.
