Why can't the media at all levels perform simple math? Seems the line that we only spend 22% of federal discretionary funds on defense. When in fact this is a serious misstatement. The actuality is roughly $1.2 to $1.6 trillion annually on defense and security.
It's a big shell game to push costs for military and security under as many different departments and individual budgets as possible to conceal the real cost of what we're spending 60% of all federal tax revenue.
Yet time after time, the pie chart comes up on screen and defense spending (DoD budget only) is represented.
Coast Guard budget in 2003 was under the Department of Transportation, since it’s been transferred to the Department of Homeland Security. The Coast Guard has active units in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sort of ironic since Afghanistan doesn’t have any water laden coasts. The Coast Guard not part of the Department of Defense budget.
Our nuclear ICBM arsenal budget for all maintenance, upkeep, refresh and development is funded under the Department of Energy’s budget. It’s not part of the Department of Defense budget.
We now have “war budgets” that don’t come out of the Department of Defense budget but their own budgets all together and standalone from the Department of Defense budget.
The Central Intelligence Agency’s budget is not publicly disclosed though it’s supposedly heavily scrutinized by the Office of Management and Budget and by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Defense Subcommittees of the Appropriations Committees in both houses of Congress. It’s not part of the Department of Defense budget.
Over 250,000 private militia work for private security companies who profit in war related activities, these activities are paid under the State Department, over $100 billion annually. Our military used to perform a good portion of these duties but now it’s privatized yet the total cost for the services provided. This is not part of the Department of Defense budget.
The Transportation Safety Administration secures our airports and transportation infrastructure, employs over 200,000 and its budget is under the Department of Homeland Security, not the Department of Defense.
National Guard has a good portion of its funding from the states, yet 90% of that they are now doing is overseas. The state money paid into the National Guard isn’t part of the Department of Defense budget.
The Border Patrol is funded under the Department of Homeland Security, not the Department of Defense.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement is funded under Department of Homeland Security, not the Department of Defense.
The US Marshals Service budget is funded under the US Department of Justice, not the Department of Defense.
Yet amazing as this is the Department of Defense’s budget has tripled since 2001.
Are we safer yet? At what monetary spend level do we become safe?
Crazy as it is DHS which has now amassed a huge amount of defense and safety services since its creation in November of 2002 has not decreased the amount of spending and budget of the Department of Defense. Ironically the taxes collected from companies and employees for SS and Medicare are going to fund war and security, not the programs themselves as was the original intent.
