Google is trying to defend itself after the revelations of NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who claimed that the United States has broad power to snoop on Americans' internet activities. The company confirmed in a statement that it does hand over user data to the government through "secure FTP transfers and in person" in compliance with federal search warrants. The company said that the government cannot access its servers directly to obtain private information.

Gretchen Carlson asked Judge Andrew Napolitano whether Google and other companies can be trusted.

He said basically these companies have no choice but to turn over the information if government investigators hand them a warrant from a FISA court. But he said the "conundrum" for companies like Google is that they are bound by law not to reveal whether they received one of these top-secret warrants.

"They would be obliged to lie. Even if they were asked that question under oath in a courtroom. ... We have a statute that says when you swear to tell the truth, you have to tell the truth. We have another that says if you get one of these FISA warrants you can't tell anybody you got it, even if that means lying," said Napolitano.

The messed up thing is even if a company like Google wanted to keep your personal information secret, they can't!

Google has been fighting the Government on this. Didn't they request a congressional hearing? They wrote something the other day...

Obviously,Google is not the enemy.

Google has no choice but to hand over your records. If a Fedcoat shows up with a FISA warrant they have to comply. They have no way of fighting the warrant, you have no way of fighting the warrant, Google cant' tell you (or anyone else) and if they don't comply they can get thrown into jail.

The problem here is FISA warrants, not Google existing.

Whether it is hackers or one or a few of the thousands of employees that work for Google, NSA, etc, there is no way all these people can be trusted not to expose some of this data on a public web server some where. Coming soon prepare for some politicians, celebrities and some average Joe's to be embarrassed.

Maybe that is what it will take to put an end to the collection.

I am glad the judge is getting in shape for the Paul/Napolitano ticket. :D

Getting caught snooping through peoples gmails accounts certainly does not warrant enemy status.

Isnt google one of the companies that gave feds direct access through PRISM? That seems voluntary (maybe not), and they would have to lie about that under oath too
