E.J. Dionne of the Post wonders why there are no nations organized on Libertarian principles.
Let me attempt to respond.

Backing up a couple of hundred years, one could argue that there was no precedent for a colony to break away from the British empire and build a Republic.
One could further argue that the USA, as founded, was a very libertarian nation.
One could further wonder why E.J. Dionne never learned that in school.

Libertarianism is inherently predisposed to walk away from a victory leaving the resulting power vacuum available to whatever despot claws to the top. Those who desire small government are loathe to actually govern. It is the antithesis of all they believe and therein lies the weakness. Liberty wins a victory then goes home to provide for her family. Who then, seeks the positions of power? Who then seeks a job with a government agency? Those who love the state.

Public opinion is shifting towards libertarianism given the revelations of late and the time is at hand to organize, work for and help get into office those who love liberty above all else. One thing libertarians have going for them is passion. Most won't go to the mat over side issues, knowing they distract from the real goal. However, when it comes to Liberty, no compromise is acceptable. One is free or one is not; no middle ground exists in an issue where black and white is the order of the day. Freedom doesn't recognize much nuance.
As many Patriots quote "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance," but when times are fat and the bounties of our land and labor are numerous, a change creeps in.
Complacency begins to emerge and arrogance rears its head. Left unchecked, tyranny is ALWAYS the result.
If we work together to win the next elections, we must stay with government and remain involved, however distasteful that thought may be. If those who love power control the machinery of the state, they will without hesitation steer it into tyranny.
I say that the state must be driven by those who distrust it. Only one who truly believes in smaller government should be trusted with power. In government, people are rewarded for landing the next grant, nabbing that budget increase or getting rid of an account balance before the end of the year so they don't find a reduction in next year's budget. Those activities are exactly what causes bloat.
Agencies ought to be rewarded for saving money and reducing budgets, not growing them.

Truly, the defense of Liberty is a never ending task and is often mundane. Please, above all else, WORK for Liberty. Just as your personal success is dependent upon the effectiveness of your labor, the success of Liberty likewise depends upon the dirty fingernails and worn shoes of her adherents. Volunteer for a campaign, make a donation, attend local political events and let everyone know that the only topic at issue is Liberty for 2014 and 2016.
