I'm as far from a techie as one can get, but it'd seem to me if a person trades in 1's and 0's the only way to keep them safe is never to put them in the airwaves..

Or to put those 1's and 0's in a country that has real privacy laws, like Switzerland. The NSA is not going to easily access, if they can at all, your cloud/email/other digital presence if it is encrypted and stored in Switzerland or other countries that have strong privacy laws.

How do you plan on getting the 1's and 0's to another country?

Its actually very easy.

You use digital services based in other countries. Get a Swiss email account or use Wuala instead of DropBox for your cloud storage space for example.

If they want your stuff there isn't any piece of software or hardware out there that can stop it. The only way to avoid it is to not use the internet. Good luck

Actually it is possible, watch this video to show how Snowden communicated with Greenwald via encrypted email that the NSA was not able to crack.

Legally, they are more allowed to go after foreign data than domestic data. There are (supposed to be) more restrictions on the sorts of domestic data they access than foreign data.

If someone is using a Swiss email account with encryption I don't believe there is much the NSA can do to access it without first going through Switzerland's legal system that is very protective of privacy.
