Pew: Majority Views NSA Phone Tracking as Acceptable Anti-terror Tactic
http://www.people-press.org/2013/06/10/majority-views-nsa-phone-tracking-as-acceptable-anti-terror-tactic/

A majority of Americans – 56% – say the National Security Agency’s (NSA) program tracking the telephone records of millions of Americans is an acceptable way for the government to investigate terrorism, though a substantial minority – 41% – say it is unacceptable. And while the public is more evenly divided over the government’s monitoring of email and other online activities to prevent possible terrorism, these views are largely unchanged since 2002, shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post, conducted June 6-9 among 1,004 adults, finds no indications that last week’s revelations of the government’s collection of phone records and internet data have altered fundamental public views about the tradeoff between investigating possible terrorism and protecting personal privacy.

And now for something completely different:

Rasmussen: 59% Oppose Government’s Secret Collecting of Phone Records
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics/june_2013/59_oppose_government_s_secret_collecting_of_phone_ records

Most voters oppose the U.S. government’s secret collection of the phone records of millions of Americans and think the feds are spying too much on U.S. citizens these days. Just 26% of Likely U.S. Voters favor the government’s secret collecting of these phone records for national security purposes regardless of whether there is any suspicion of wrongdoing. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 59% are opposed to the practice. Fifteen percent (15%) are undecided.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on June 6-7, 2013 by Rasmussen Reports.

How reliable can these polls be, now that people know their opinions on what the NSA is doing is being recorded by the NSA.

"Hello, this is a poll being taken to see if you approve of big brother listening to your opinions on big brother. Big brother is listening right now, do you approve?"

Sorry I missed it, Warlord. Nice analysis!

@jimantle (https://twitter.com/jimantle) 34m Pew and Rasmussen have diametrically opposed results on the NSA phone tracking. Will have to look closer at questions.

They are both phrased in ways likely to get the results they got.

Pew asks, "Should the gov't be able to monitor everyone's email to prevent possible terrorism?" Gets one result.

Rasmussen says feds "secretly collecting the phone records of millions of Americans for national security purposes..." 1/2

Tacks on "regardless of whether there is any suspicion of wrongdoing," before asking whether ppl favor or oppose. Gets diff result. 2/2

Ramsussen also uses the word "spying" in another question.

So obviously how the issue is framed matters very much for how majorities perceive it.

Because Boobus is incapable of critical thinking.

The swing you get when the other party is in power is the real scary part of this poll! Also, how easily manipulated a large percentage of independents are when the media tells them what to think. (You know, when their guy is in office)

Great clip, Warlord!

Indeed, Capt. Partisan hacks are destroying this country. No one listens to George (http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/washing.asp).

To be a partisan is to trust that those leaders are generally working in your best interest. The fact that this is frequently not true doesn’t seem to destroy that trust. The last thing that partisans want to hear is that their trust is misplaced, because this throws their reason for being a partisan into doubt. On the whole, partisans are unmoved by the argument that they are contradicting their principles by supporting a given administration policy, because their partisanship does not come from adherence to a set of principles that can be contradicted (http://www.theamericanconservative.com/larison/the-sources-of-partisan-bias/).
