Edward Snowden: the whistleblower behind revelations of NSA surveillance

The 29-year-old source behind the biggest intelligence leak in US history explains his motives, his uncertain future and why he never intended on hiding in the shadows

The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of the defence contractor Booz Allen Hamilton. Snowden has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors, including Booz Allen and Dell.

The Guardian, after several days of interviews, is revealing his identity at his request. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection of anonymity. "I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong," he said.

Snowden will go down in history as one of America's most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning. He is responsible for handing over material from one of the world's most secretive organisations – the NSA.

In a note accompanying the first set of documents he provided, he wrote: "I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions," but "I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant."

The NSA has requested that the Justice Department open a criminal investigation into the leaks.

They will get their request.

Hopefully this man knows what he is doing and the whistle blower laws that are supposed to protect him.

May end up going the route of John Kirakou. They are pissed.

I don't know if he learned about this there or somewhere else, though. Should have been posted here:

An invoice for $310 was received by employer of the whistle blower back in 2011:

Anonymous Charges Booz Allen $310 for Hacking Their Email

HBGary Federal was just one of several companies involved in proposing software solutions for this project. Another company involved was Booz Allen Hamilton. Anonymous has been investigating them for some time, and has uncovered all sorts of other shady practices by the company, including potentially illegal surveillance systems, corruption between company and government officials, warrantless wiretapping, and several other questionable surveillance projects. All of this, of course, taking place behind closed doors, free from any public knowledge or scrutiny.

I am alternating between extreme emotions right now: amazement at the stones this man had, fury at the system: for I know what lays in store for him, and shame at my own petty efforts.

One of the questions Greenwald asked is "would the information be valuable to other governments" (paraphrased)? Of course it would be interesting to them. Knowing who talks to who on the phone is very valuable information from a political perspective. Which is the same reason that it is a power that is destined to be abused by any government. The IRS has been used for political purposes. No number of talking heads and former officials that are paraded on the Sunday morning talk shows can propagandize away the fact that this type of power will be abused. This will be a hell of a legal battle. Pretty much all whistle blowers are violating employment agreements. That is a pretty standard situation. It's a conflict between that and whistleblower protection laws.

Public opinion and Congress will have some say in this case. He may have been better off testifying before Congress as a whistleblower. No doubt he looked at his options though. He doesn't seem the type to act without some forethought.

A contract with evil is non binding on a free man with a soul.

Fuck them and their contracts.

I have seen much more sensitive information shared between governments that have quite different ideologies and some are even arch enemies, yet still share highly info. I have few doubts the US government hasn't already shared all these eavesdropping technologies to be used by their buddy & puppet governments/dictators and even some false opposition governments on their very own people/citizenry/companies/businesses.

If they'd like to have a world reach, not content with their own little farm, then YES. It must be hard to argue that the US government doesn't want to have a world reach.

Dots are starting to get connected now from Hawaii to Utah. Original Wired 2012 report excerpts:

Shady Companies With Ties to Israel Wiretap the U.S. for the NSA
By James Bamford (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/author/james-bamford/) 04.03.12
Army General Keith Alexander, the director of the NSA, is having a busy year — hopping around the country, cutting ribbons at secret bases and bringing to life the agency’s greatly expanded eavesdropping network.
In January he dedicated the new $358 million CAPT Joseph J. Rochefort Building at NSA Hawaii, and in March he unveiled the 604,000-square-foot John Whitelaw Building at NSA Georgia.

Designed to house about 4,000 earphone-clad intercept operators, analysts and other specialists, many of them employed by private contractors, it will have a 2,800-square-foot fitness center open 24/7, 47 conference rooms and VTCs, and “22 caves,” according to an NSA brochure from the event. No television news cameras were allowed within two miles of the ceremony.

The climax, however, will be the opening next year of the NSA’s mammoth 1-million-square-foot, $2 billion Utah Data Center. The centerpiece in the agency’s decade-long building boom, it will be the “cloud” where the trillions of millions of intercepted phone calls, e-mails, and data trails will reside, to be scrutinized by distant analysts over highly encrypted fiber-optic links.

OMG! He's in my fucking Neighborhood!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/snowden-nsa-leak-whistleblower-cia-204241311.html

Snowden said he decided to leave his family, girlfriend and a comfortable, $200,000-a-year salary behind, and flew to Hong Kong on May 20. He said he chose China because "they have a spirited commitment to free speech and the right of political dissent."

He made me proud of Hong Kong for a second. But his hopes won't last too long, HK is very close to USA, they won't hold him for long.

He was better off doing the interview (asking for 24 hours before breaking the story) to cross into China and seek asylum there. Now it's too late, he needs to apply for Visa to China (it's separate visa than HK which is visa on Arrival), and now it's too late. Hong Kong does have some things to help people fleeing their country, but I'm not well versed on it.

What the hell is the world come to, when a person fighting for FREEDOM needs to run to China. UGH.

Guys, Hong Kong is tiny, he's within a 10-20 mile radius of me, I truly wish I could buy him a beer and let him know he is our HERO and all of us on RPF thank him for his ultimate sacrifice.

The article on my phone is different then the above link. It talks about Peter King R-NY who says, "Snowden should be extradited from Hong Kong immediately...and PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW."

He goes on to say he's helped Al-Qaida by alerting them of our survelliance.

PETER KING THE TYRANT has spoken. They are going to get this guy and tear him a new one. (My turn for TEARS) He's going to Prison much longer then Nelson Mandela, and he won't get the same sympathy. They have a special kind of prison for this type of traitor. (Breaks my heart to know this guy's future is over).

As regards the schism within the GOP: A dilution, the same way they loaded the stage with pretenders against Ron Paul in 2012 they now encourage a broader divide. While I am not convinced, by any means nor any stretch of even the most inventive imagination, that there is an 'us'; this cannot be good for us.

Shit has many names. Poop, defecate, feces, waste... no matter what you call it the stench is the samT

This whistleblower must be in league with Adam Kokesh, what with all the action and what not.

Do you have any insight into why Bradley Manning was a 'contract violating, troop risk increasing, irresponsible asshole' and Edward Snowden is considered a hero?

Perhaps it is because they are actually affected and the brown people in Iraq abetted terrrists?

I wondered this a few pages back after my comment got so much attention. I do remember people here demonizing Manning for his contractual violation he committed.

It just seems like a double standard to me.

A lot of it (probably most of it) has to do with the fact that he exposed the military and Edward Snowden exposed the government spying on pretty much everybody in the country. As long as it was brown people overseas being slaughtered they were ok with it.

Snowden better get his butt over to mainland China and ASAP, he should grab the next train out.

Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the US and there is already a growing chorus of calls to extradite him. He is much more vulnerable in Hong Kong than in mainland China.

1. I wonder what his RPF handle is?

2. What happens to this guy will dictate how much more of this activity there is. Its up to us to stand behind this guy. If given the opportunity, we need to support him and his family in any way possible. There will need to be more Edward Snowdens, if policy is going to change.

Yeah no doubt HK will turn him over... he should have been in Shanghai... cheaper hotels too.

What Snowden is claiming regarding his "authority" to tap into whatever he wanted at any moment isn't anything new. Analysts have always had this ability, even before the internet and cell phones were mainstream. Phone tapping operations by Feds have operated the same way for a long time. Any analyst could punch in any phone number into his computer and instantly intercept all communications for that landline, no warrants or oversight required. Whether any of it was admissible as evidence in a trial is a different story but the capability has always been there. It's no surprise that the same mechanisms have evolved as technology has evolved.

Snowden could be a CIA agent, releasing this information in an attempt to slowly silence the public. This news will have a big chill effect on the American people and internet perhaps. People are friendlier to big brother when they know big brother is watching. And that could very well be all they want to do.

HOWEVER.... ....Snowden has already released some information about "Boundless Informant" which talks of The US surveillance state across the world.

The biggest problem for me with our hero is the strategic $250 donations to Ron. Just enough to show up in FEC records and be revealed when his celebrity breaks....

reaks somewhat. or it could be a FU to the establishment.

This guy is a CIA agent with no Facebook account. He's not about to put his name on FEC records so easily.

There is still more to come out...

Makes me laugh @ people htting Rand for 'reserving judgement'. A lot of us here are too. Although the hero narrative is great and should be milked.

what bothers me the most is the $20M price tag. If they all made what this guy did, or maybe averaged a bit less, say $100,000 a year for guesstimate's sake, that would mean there are only 200 NSA snoops. How much you want to bet his contractor put out that little number to inflate the number of agents in the program? 200,000 a year means 100 NSA snoops, but 100,000 a year means 200 NSA snoops a year. Big difference.

What 20M price tag?

The PRISM slides:

http://a.abcnews.com/images/Technology/ht_nsa_prism_data_collection_graphic_thg_130607_wg .jpg

Two programs were unveiled, PRISM and Boundless Informant. 4 of 63 slides have been shown. So supposedly, Snowden has 59 more slides detailing the NSA spy program. And Greenwald says they will release more, and it is going to get worse. This is just the beginning.

He is putting out bits a day, today, for example, he detailed American hacking into China for a large Chinese English speaking paper. He is going to try to rally the Chinese to his defense, because he loves Hong Kong, supposedly. Or he might just be a mastermind, maybe even a Messiah of some sort.
