It was an interesting day. The "l"ibertarian wing is mainly interested in supporting Glen, so we did not come armed with a stack of items to try and pass. So instead many of us were getting up and taking sides on regular GOP issues and amendments.

The access-to-home-midwife amendment to the platform was VERY inside baseball. That had passed at last year's convention after lengthy debate. But it mysteriously disappeared from the proposed platform this year, and the platform committee chairwoman could not articulate why. It sounded very bad to the whole state delegation, that a committee would delete something that had been approved at a prior convention, and treat it so disinterestly that it was gone without explanation. So the amendment was returned to the platform by a wide margin.

@jennbatchelor 2m Looneys may have a point. It seems the weights are being calculated by dividing allotted by credentialed, not ballots cast. #ncgopconvention

@jennbatchelor 3m That being said, I don't think it is going to make a difference in this race. Vice Chairman maybe... #ncgopconvention

I hope whatever that nonsense is, it helps Glen!

Also, I don't know the ins and the outs and what-have-yous, but the establishment Chair candidate (Pope (https://twitter.com/profg/status/343472158321807360)) won big, in I assume one county:

Just got home from the convention. Not calling shenanigans but the chairman changed the vote reporting method for VC election. The Chair election had each county announce vote totals out loud to entire convention and was totaled in real time. VC voting was changed to each delegation lead lining up and reporting their county total directly to the vote tabulator. The vote totals were then unveiled and the winner announced. Glen came in second.

In NH?

We didn't lose in NH. The VC is a Constitutionalist that likes the FSP. The Chair also likes the FSP. She even spoke at Liberty Forum 2013.

Anyway, I'm sorry to see that neither the best candidate for VC or Chair won in NC but maybe it will all work out somehow. 2nd isn't bad. Hopefully the good guy for US Senate wins there.

MozoVote

The NCGOP almost had a train wreck tonight. If a second round of balloting had been required for VP, there was not a quorum to conduct it. They also had a computer go down during the chairman's balloting and needed to reboot and re-enter the vote totals in order to calculate "weighting".

There are some positives in the results for Glen. He did much better than Kindley who has tried 2 or 3 times now to win a statewide race. Glen got about 30% of the vote which demonstrates he does have "standing" and influence in the party.

It sucks to lose, but I cannot say I'm surprised. The Republican Women's Clubs are the most organized chapters of the party, and when they line up for someone, it's very tough to top them. Loyalty and service do count significantly in the NCGOP.

Just got back to my hotel room. Next year, someone needs to make a motion to amend the PLO to make the convention business day ONLY BUSINESS. After sitting through 3 hours (or more) or speeches, waiting 30 minutes on the Credentials Committee chair to be found, spending an hour or more just on credentials, then going through the same Point of Informations three or four times through, even I felt like leaving. In all seriousness though, elected delegates ought to do their jobs and plow through all of the business instead of voting on two or three things, applauding themselves for a job well done, and schmoozing it up at the banquets just like the representatives of the counties they truly are. Many people I spoke to also feel the same way--several of whom who weren't even Brosch/Bradley supporters at all--but perhaps the most disheartening feedback I heard was from those who were attending the convention for their first time and are "never coming back".

On a positive note, the number of liberty minded delegates this year greatly exceeded the numbers from last year, and we did make a good splash. I'm going to paraphrase a little of what Glen told me after the convention, which was that our true victory this year was our showings at the district and local level conventions, and the strong numbers we are now pleased to have on the Executive (and Central) Committee(s). I predict even stronger turnouts in years to come.

Anyways, a big Congrats and Thanks to our fellow RPFer Gunny for being the runner-up, and for everything he did to bring everyone out to conventions at all levels.

Great seeing everyone! :)

Middle-aged and senior citizen women with wealthy husbands are truly the kingmakers in the NCGOP. Once they decide to get behind someone, they harangue their husbands and all their church friends into supporting him/her, and it's all over but the shouting.

I do have to agree with the sentiment that the real progress was made at the county and district levels. We now have at least a couple of pairs of eyes on the Central Committee, which is the true power center of the party, and that's never been the case before this year.

lib3rtarian
06-09-2013, 04:26 AM
I was going around trying to swing some middle-aged women votes at the last moment, but they made it clear that they are voting for Joyce because she is a woman and that they are biased about it.

aclove
06-09-2013, 01:20 PM
Yes. They are completely open and unashamed about their bias and lack of substantive reasons for supporting her. They want someone like themselves (older Southern religious female) in leadership, and that's all there is to it.

The next big fight is going to be the US Senate race here in 2014. The establishment will be out in similar force against Greg Brannon. If we don't support Brannon with everything we got, we only got ourselves to blame.

Things to do:

1) Write to FreedomWorks, Club For Growth and the Senate Conservative Fund to throw their support behind Brannon.
2) Donate.
3) Host house parties and fund raisers: http://gregbrannon.com/host-a-house-party/ . Brannon will come and speak there.
4) Talk to friends and family.

All of the states near NC are freer than NC and that's not likely to change anytime soon. TN is the freest state in the area so you might want to consider that. The freest part of TN is the rural areas of East TN but many people are quite uneducated and bigoted there so I wouldn't recommend that area unless you are a Christian, white person.

I don't put 100% trust into this rating at all but it is pretty easy to tell that VA (outside of the DC suburbs) is freer than NC and TN is freer than the both of them.
http://freedominthe50states.org/

NC
#24 Overall
#25 Fiscal
#14 Personal
#14 Regulatory

VA
#8 Overall
#12 Fiscal
#38 Personal
#9 Regulatory

TN
#3 Overall
#2 Fiscal
#24 Personal
#12 Regulatory

That said, as long as you are willing to increase your activism, recruit additional activists and keep trying, maybe, eventually things will get better in NC. You just need to try a lot hard and encourage others to do the same.

I was in the NCGOP State Executive Committee meeting Sunday morning. Big political drama went down concerning Greg Brannon's opponent, NC House Speaker Thom Tillis. Read all about it here:

I sat directly next to Tillis during Saturday's speeches. His body language said that I made him uncomfortable being up in his personal space. I enjoyed it :)

I was interviewed today by the Charlotte Observer about Tillis' actions at yesterday's ExComm meeting. That story will run in tomorrow's edition.

NC
#24 Overall
#25 Fiscal
#14 Personal
#14 Regulatory

VA
#8 Overall
#12 Fiscal
#38 Personal
#9 Regulatory

TN
#3 Overall
#2 Fiscal
#24 Personal
#12 Regulatory

That said, as long as you are willing to increase your activism, recruit additional activists and keep trying, maybe, eventually things will get better in NC. You just need to try a lot hard and encourage others to do the same.

Weird that Va is better than NC but sucks on personal freedom...Va would be closer to my wife's family and we tried Tn once...for some reason she just don't like it there...Or maybe just not eastern Tn...personally I love it..We have looked at moving to Roanoke but we need to find a good place to settle down for 10-15 years for the kids to complete school in one place...we shall see...hopefully next year we can defeat some of the establishment's power in the house and senate they are destroying this state and making people like me want to leave BADLY!

VA is a police state, particularly the closer you get to DC. Commonwealth laws and taxation. No bueno.

Where would you suggest in the south then Devil21? Ga is a no way and wife don't want to live in Tn for some reason.

True. But it is a lot freer than NC. If someone was really going to move for political reasons, the best recommendation is New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project, just saying :p

I am not the Devil21 but the freest parts of the South are rural East TN, rural VA and rural GA. Being rural is important to keep taxes, regulations and codes down. It also might mean you are in a dry county, though. But then again, some people get annoyed by a lot of type of people found in the rural South.

Im not sure I'd judge the "freeness" on some arbitrary ranking system or purely political events. Ive lived in both VA and NC for extended lengths and have felt much more comfortable and "free" in NC than I ever did in Northern VA. Rural VA may be better but like you said, rural is generally better than urban for freedom in general.

I echo these thoughts. I've lived in Colorado, Texas, California, and now Oklahoma. I've but just arrived in Oklahoma and I've encountered more interference and bureaucracy in my personal life in 5 months than I have in the last 5 years. Holy crap are these folks nosey.

That is an important point and I agree. This was for an off year with no elections other than party offices! Our numbers increased large in a year with nothing to fight for nationally (Glen running or not, I know most of us were still going to attend). That's a great sign for the future if we can stay involved and keep the fuckin NSA from spying on us and the CIA from black bagging us before 2016.

I don't think the number of liberty delegates increased this year. Last year we had 300+. This year probably 200 at best.
