That's some nice kit right there... A great defense system for any would be dictator against the crazed interventionists and Israeli/US/EU jets.

“As for the S-300s, it’s one of the best air defense systems in the world,” Putin said following a Russia-EU summit. “It’s a serious weapon. We would not like to tip the balance of power in the region. We signed the contract a few years ago. It has not been implemented yet.”

Russia’s S-300 contract with Syria has been a contentious issue in international diplomacy recently. Opponents of the Syrian government insist that Russia’s planned sale of the system would aid Damascus in its fight against the rebels.

Moscow maintains that the S-300s will help stabilize Syria by deterring those who seek to escalate the conflict, and would not help the Syrian government fight the rebels, who do not have aircraft or missiles.

Defending the existing contract, Putin stressed that the deliveries are transparent and do not violate international law. He went on to mention that Britain sponsored an international treaty that forbids supplying arms to non-governmental actors.

“We presume that all UN members will join it or at least starting from this day follow the rules and principles, which our British colleagues suggested,” Putin said.

Barring a military coup, Assad isn't going anywhere just like Castro didn't go anywhere. Khaddafi, Mubbarak and Saddam all made the mistake of counting on the west to be their allies. When the west turned on them they had no one to turn to. Assad hedged it's bests, being a torture master for the United States CIA while at the same time making himself valuable to the Chinese and indispensable to the Russians. Obama wound spit without U.N. approval and he will never get security council approval for a strike on Syria. Really Russia sending in AA missiles gives Obama a face saving way out.

Russia yanked Iran's chain for the S300 for years. Whose to say they are not doing the same thing in Syria?

Iran isn't in the middle of a civil war and facing an imminent attack.

The rebels are flying jet fighters and bombers against Assad?

HOLLYWOOD: Looks to me in the pictures they've perfected the system (or just put money shiny paint on it) either way I suspect its updated now and more bad ass. They certainly must be confident to supply it commercially.

Strategic Surface-to-Air Missile Systems
In the strategic department Russia can offer the best and most affordable SAM systems in the world.
Our newest system, the S-400 Triumf comes at a cost of only $400 million per 8-launcher, 112-missile battery. This includes the ability to strike almost any target, including ballistic missiles at ranges exceeding 400km. It also offers flexibility, as it can use many different missiles to offer varying coverage and capability.
The 40N6 missile can reach 400km, the 48N6 can reach 250km, the 9M96E series offers varying ranges between 40km and 120km, and offers significant capability against fast and maneuverable targets.

If you want something that still offers plenty of capability, at a lower cost, Russia can offer the S-300VM at a cost of $220 million per battery, that can reach out to 200km. Like the S-400 is can also engage ballistic targets.

Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile System
As a medium range alternative, Russia can offer the S-600 Vityaz, currently in development with delivery expected in 2014.

The S-600 is fully capable of engaging all airborne targets at ranges between 120km and 10 km using the 9M96E family and the very capable 9M100 missile.

An S-600 battery includes four launchers and 48 missiles. The 9M100 can be quad-packed allowing for four missiles to be carried for each 9M96E. It costs $120 million per battery.

Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile System
Another in-development system is the S-650 Morfey, with expected delivery in 2015. The system uses the 9M100 missile and each vehicle carries its own radar and 40 missiles. Up to 32 vehicles can be controlled from each control center.

A single launcher costs $18 million, including missiles, and a command center costs $5 million.

"The warheads of the Club-K missiles might not be exclusively conventional. According to Jane’s, the Club missiles are analogous to the Soviet RK-55 cruise missile, which was designed to carry a 200-kiloton nuclear warhead. The SS-N-27A land-attack missile could also be armed with a high-power generator used as an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapon or E-Bomb."

These missiles are designed to shoot down F22 and F35. Problem is those are being obsoleted by drones, which are now ubiquitous enough that they will soon be expendable. Which costs more, the drone, or the missile to shoot it down?
