Carl ran for Mayor and lost to Filner (who actually isn't that bad so far) and is a fiscal conservative/social liberal.

Should he be included among the candidates and if so, how many stars?

He is a heck of a lot better than Peters in any case.

ps: someone email him over NDAA, Audit the Fed, ending the Empire, etc.

Filner wasn't that bad? Wasn't he the guy that wanted to take the Iranian Islamo-Marxists off the terrorist list?

The MEK are secular/democratic and have a significant Atheist-Agnostic component. They are not Islamo-Marxists.

and Ron Paul also wants them off the list IIRC.

DeMaio looks to have an interesting story. I would like to see more on civil liberty issues from him.

"I see myself as a 'new generation Republican' who wants to challenge the party to focus on pocket-book, economic and quality of life issues in a more positive and inclusive way, rather than issues that are, frankly, none of the government's business in the first place," - Carl DeMaio (http://www.policymic.com/articles/45535/carl-demaio-this-next-generation-republican-s-socially-liberal-stance-will-save-the-gop/591617)

Very interesting indeed. A fiscally conservative, socially liberal candidate could be a winning combination in California. If he comes out in favor of privacy rights along with a strong but restrained foreign policy, he will probably do very well in that district (PVI D+2).

Also openly gay, so they can't hit him on being against gay rights as most of the higher-ups in the Republican Party believe. Scott Peters, who currently holds the seat, did vote for CISPA, so DeMaio could hit him on that:

After the vote, Peters rushed out a statement linking the issue to control of terrorism and playing up the business that the measure would bring San Diego's high tech security sector:

“Today’s action helps protect us against cyber attacks that could cripple our infrastructure and our national security, and cost our country untold amounts of money and jobs,” he said. “It’s important for us to act before, not after, a devastating attack that would leave us wishing we had acted sooner.”
