New York Republican Rep. Peter King said he won’t be attending his party’s annual state dinner Wednesday night because of featured guest Sen. Ted Cruz’s earlier efforts to scuttle a Hurricane Sandy relief bill.

“I don’t think we should be acknowledging people who are voting against us in our hour of need,” said King to BuzzFeed. “Once I found it was him…I decided not to go. I don’t know if I would have gone or not because of scheduling things, but that made it easy once I found out it was Ted Cruz.”

As a newly-minted senator in January, Cruz voted against a slew of measures, including one that provided aid to victims devastated by Hurricane Sandy last October. In a statement, Cruz explained that he couldn’t vote for the package because “cynical politicians in Washington could not resist loading up this relief bill with billions in new spending utterly unrelated to Sandy.”

The $51 billion aid package ended up passing both houses of Congress despite similar protestations from fiscal conservatives.

Since then, Cruz has morphed into both a rising star, and deeply divisive figure within the GOP. The Tea Party favorite and rumored 2016 contender has spoken at numerous events, including the National Rifle Association’s annual convention earlier this month, and the Conservative Political Action Conference in March. (Cruz delivered the keynote address at CPAC.)

But Cruz has also created a rift within his own party, most recently declaring that he doesn’t “trust the Republicans” or the Democrats when it comes to solving the nation’s budget woes.

The New York Republican State Committee invited the polarizing Texas conservative to deliver the keynote address at Wednesday’s fundraising event–which, according to the group’s website, is meant to “showcase diversity.” Also in attendance will be representatives from the Latino National Republican Coalition, National Black Republican Council, Asian American Republican Committee, and several other groups.

“Tonight’s diverse group proves that the Republican tent is growing by the day,” said state Chairman Ed Cox, who also spoke out in defense of Cruz’s participation at the dinner, BuzzFeed reports.

“Ted Cruz made it absolutely clear he was all for Sandy aid, but he was against the pork which was stuffed in there by Democrats,” said Cox. “That’s what he was voting against.”

King disagreed, telling BuzzFeed he “would not have invited” Cruz.

“Ed Cox says it serves a purpose,” said King. “I just disagree.”

Peter King is the House's Lindsey Graham. He needs to go.

Despite Cruz's reasoning, however logical it may be, the practical point is that he voted against relief to victims, and that's what people are and will zero in on for this.

He's worse.

I'm sure the evening will be all the better for it.

I have some reservations about Cruz, but he's a lot better than King.

Ted Cruz has plenty of support in NY outside of the likes of Peter King.

Man, if you (Peter King) find Ted Cruz too libertarian for your liking I honestly don't know what I can say...

Yeah, Cruz is better than King. That ain't saying much. Bush was better than Hitler, but so what? He was still a warmongerer and a murderer. Cruz supports intervention in Iran, and so is also a warmongerer....

Peter King AND Ted Cruz should be voted out.

You can sell the entire state as long as I'm permitted to leave...

Cruz is doing more good than harm by a pretty good margin. Vote him out only to replace him with someone worse (because that is the only possible outcome)? I don't see how this helps the liberty movement.

You use foreign policy as a single voter issue but it is more than JUST our foreign policy that is destroying our nation. Even on foreign policy though he would still be replaced by someone worse than him.
Throwing him out will result in even more foreign intervention if anything.

The northern part of the state is pretty nice, though. We'll keep it, Vermont, and New Hampshire. England can have everything else in the Northeast.

Yeah, one of only 3 senators who stands with the Constitution 99% of the time should be voted out...

Cruz is extremely well versed in Austrian economics and was even a libertarian in his youth.

We need allies like Ted Cruz to fix our broken monetary policy.

He's even worse. He's a big gun control advocate, while Graham is at least opposed to gun control. It might be more accurate to say that he's the House's Joe Lieberman.

The comment to vote Cruz out is one of the dumbest comments I have ever read on this forum.

Who are socialists.

I was thinking you'd defend them, given they're fellow Catholics. Surprised you didn't.

It's disgusting for a sitting Congressman to affiliate himself with a terrorist organization.

They IRA uses Catholicism in the same way the Soviets created republics and autonomous regions for different ethnic groups; to gain support from the masses. Catholicism is incompatible with the IRA's socialist views and terroristic tactics, just as ethnic communities were incompatible with Marxist thought.

If only things were so great that Cruz could be considered one of the worst senators. Until we get to that point I'll support people like Cruz because we've seen that the alternative is much worse.

Yeah, it would be great if the biggest of our problems were senators like Ted Cruz not being conservative/constitutionalist enough.

I'll call David Dewhurst for you. When are you going to make a "Draft Dewhurst" page on Facebook? And while you're at it...since you seem to hate Rand so much, you should call Trey Grayson and draft him for senate as well.

It's just too bad that Cruz still somewhat pro-intervention and spoke at the AIPAC convention recently. I like him on domestic stuff but not FP. (it feels really weird saying that as Ron Paul guy, lol)

How about you let individuals keep their wealth in the first place instead of just accepting as a fact of life the central mismanagement of anything under the sun.

People like P King can go to hell..just another professional politician looking for a comfortable seat in DC.

I'd obviously not support someone worse. But I'd never vote for Cruz either.

I don't automatically vote for everyone who has good foreign policy, but I do rule out interventionists automatically. Mass murder is the worst of the bad things our country is doing.
