Not as big as recent Texas fertilizer factory explosion that levelled a whole town but third derailment/train collision this month seems pretty unusual.

Derailment, blast near Baltimore rattles homes

May 29, 2013 12:04 am

ROSEDALE, Md. -- A CSX freight train crashed into a trash truck and derailed Tuesday in a Baltimore suburb, and the explosion that followed rattled homes at least a half-mile away, sending a plume of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles, officials and witnesses said.
In the third serious derailment this month, the dozen or so cars, at least one carrying hazardous materials, went off the tracks about 2 p.m. in Rosedale, a Baltimore eastern suburb.

NPR posts a youtube video link laced with expletives:

But many people miles away from the place where a 15-car train hit a commercial truck were surprised by a huge explosion that shattered windows and rocked businesses and homes. A few videos , but the AP has the only one we saw that isn't laced with expletives:

They also found that there was no crossing gate at the site of the collision.

There were crossbucks though, at which point the driver of any vehicle should slow so they can yield to any approaching trains. Especially since it was a truck, the driver should have come to a complete stop and then proceed if it was safe to do so. (See paragraph two (http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/xings/com_roaduser/07010/sec02.htm))

The FRA requires (http://www.fra.dot.gov/Page/P0104):

Under the Train Horn Rule (http://www.fra.dot.gov/Page/P0105) (49 CFR Part 222), locomotive engineers must begin to sound train horns at least 15 seconds, and no more than 20 seconds, in advance of all public grade crossings.

so the driver should've heard the train approaching, and stopped.
