BRUSSELS — European Union foreign ministers Monday agreed to lift an arms embargo in order to supply weapons to Syrian rebels, British Foreign Secretary William Hague announced.

Announcing the agreement after more than 12 hours of tough talks, Hague said the EU would maintain the remainder of a far-reaching package of sanctions against the Assad regime that are set to expire Friday at midnight.

Britain has "no immediate" plan to send weapons to Syrian opposition fighters despite the decision, Hague said.

"While we have no immediate plans to send arms to Syria it gives us the flexibility to respond in the future if the situation continues to deteriorate and worsen," Hague told reporters.

Was there a European Parliament vote?

No. This was closed door stuff... the EU is about as democratic as China or North Korea.

Right EU decision tonight. Arms embargo on Syrian opposition ended. No immediate decision to send arms. Other sanctions remain

U.S. Secretary of State Kerry went to Europe urging that the European Union drop its embargo on shipments of heavy arms into the hands of the Syrian rebels. Are we surprised that the EU has now done exactly that (http://www.voanews.com/content/russia-criticizes-eu-for-dropping-syrian-rebel-arms-ban/1669563.html)?

The article says "British Foreign Secretary William Hague says the amended embargo puts pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to seek a non-military solution to more than two years of fighting."

This is a bald-faced lie. Remember that a political process occurred in February of 2012 when a new Syrian constitution was passed overwhelmingly (https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&site=&source=hp&q=syria+new+constitution+2012&oq=syria+new+constitutio&gs_l=hp.1.2.0j0i22i30l9.2051.8272.0.11320.21.21.0. 0.0.0.293.2505.0j20j1.21.0...0.0...1c.1.14.hp.62NS ffufaSo). Further details on the referendum are here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_constitutional_referendum,_2012).

The EU's decision affirms that the EU intends violently to overthrow Assad and install a new government, both actions in violation of their solemn oaths in the U.N. They are not seeking a "non-military solution" to anything, not by intensifying the fighting.

Thanks for that Frank. I didn't realize he'd signed a new constitution last year.

Assad will leave after his term is finished then
