Libertarians eager to move beyond mere ideological victories are making progress in a long-term effort to migrate to one state to concentrate efforts and reshape communities based on their ideals of less government and individualism.

The grand social experiment can be traced to a 2001 essay by a Yale doctoral student who lamented about Libertarians’ failure to get candidates elected and argued the best way to make a real impact is for 20,000 activists to move to a relatively small state with low taxes and job opportunities, then making inroads in government, communities and courts.

New Hampshire won in a 2003 online vote. And 10 years later, more than 1,200 activists have already moved there, with roughly 13,000 others pledging to follow after the 20,000 sign up for the so-called Free State Project.

Though their numbers remain relatively small, and achieving full strength appears at least several years away, Libertarians now living in New Hampshire say they have already had several successes, including at least a dozen members winning seats in the 424-member state legislature.

"The first biggest success is we’re still around," Carla Gericke, the project’s president, told FoxNews.com on Friday. “People are going forward, and we’re past the experiment stage. We’re now in the getting it done stage.”

Members point to their support of a 2002 law that gives jurors the right to challenge the applicability of laws when deciding cases and a 2007 effort to keep New Hampshire from participating in the national identification card program known as REAL ID -- as they continue to push for gun rights, home schooling and medical marijuana.

Among the project members who opposed REAL ID was state Rep. Joel Winters, a Democrat who said he had a growing concern about the Bush administration intruding on the lives of Americans and that the early victory “set the stage” for future successes.

“It really helped persuade New Hampshire to shift the conversation,” he told Fox.

The movement got a boost from the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns of Libertarian and then-Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul. Paul praised the project when campaigning in New Hampshire, the first primary state, and helped inspire legions of young Americans excited about a future with less government intrusion.

But the movement also has its challenges and detractors, particularly those upset about activists in the city of Keene who have chosen a course of civil disobedience -- including smoking pot in public.

Furthermore, the group’s singular, decentralized goal of bringing people to New Hampshire, then letting them do what they want, has posed challenges to recruiting and fundraising.

“We’re about individualism, not collectivism,” Gericke told New Hampshire Public Radio last month. “Freedom can be messy.”

She argues the pledge says people must move within five years of the 20,000 signups, so the 1,200 already there are really “eager beavers.” And she thinks Free State can reach its petition goal by 2015 -- three years ahead of its projected schedule.

Rand is going to give you a big boost... make sure you get organized now and help him. You can really amplify your support in a GOP presidential primary

Obama won 52 % of the vote in New Hampshire , 7 of ten counties if I recall.Ron Paul did get 4 % of the vote in the Dem primary . Oyarde prediction , Dems retain New Hampshire in 2016. Tell Vermin Supreme I said HI, I could use a new toothbrush , but do not need a pony, they are too needy.

1976 - 1988 , if I recall , New Hampshire voted GOP in Presidential election , maybe only once since then has it not gone to Dems and that will be 16 years ago by next Pres election. 4 electoral votes ? Irrelevant , goes to the most socialist candidate in the general elction, my guess... that is what Easterners crave.

98.6% of New Hampshire voted for Obama and Romney.

Here's its Liberty Delegation:

Members of the House of Representatives
Carol Shea-Porter, District 1
Ann Kuster, District 2

Members of the Senate
Kelly Ayotte
Jeanne Shaheen

Well...federal candidates don't count.

That is great advice. In 2008, NH was 1 of Ron Paul's best states. In fact, he likely wouldn't have even run if he didn't raise a bunch of money at the fundraiser in NH that happened as part of Liberty Forum in 2007, before he announced. NH was the best state for Ron Paul when it came to fundraising in the 2008 cycle. In the 2012 cycle, NH was definitely the best state for Ron Paul. I think a lot of people were impressed at how well Ron Paul did in NH in 2012.

Ron Paul placed a strong second (http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=24873.msg273746#msg273746) in the 2012 New Hampshire Republican Primary, scoring 23% and more votes than Gingrich, Santorum, Perry and 24 other candidates combined

Ron Paul took first among voters under 40 years old, voters that made under $30,000 per year and several other groups (http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=24873.msg273744#msg273744), including both socially liberal voters and voters that wanted a true conservative

4.5% of the population voted for Ron Paul in NH, the next highest state was VT (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?360037-Percentage-of-total-state-population-voting-for-Ron-Paul-compared) where 2.4% of the population voted for Ron Paul. It is also well known that a man from NH ran the southern VT campaign and many folks from NH helped in VT.

Ron Paul took second in the NH Democratic Primary and at 59,000+ votes overall, received 17% more votes than Obama

Ron Paul's very strong showing in the New Hampshire Primary gave Ron Paul a 70% boost in the South Carolina Primary polls (http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?topic=24873.msg273745#msg273745) and a 25% boost nationally (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/entry.php?563-Ron-Paul%92s-Success-in-New-Hampshire-Boosted-his-Support-by-25-Nationally)

41% of the US and state legislators who endorsed Ron Paul, including many Free State Project participants, are New Hampshire legislators (http://nhfreedom.wordpress.com/2012/06/29/ronpaulendorsements/)

3 State Senators (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?317094-Ron-Paul-Endorsements-from-Elected-Officials) and 3 newspapers (http://www.forbes.com/sites/kenrapoza/2012/01/04/three-nh-newspapers-endorse-ron-paul/) endorsed Ron Paul

Ron Paul dominated straw polls across New Hampshire including the New Hampshire Young Republicans Straw Poll, commanding 45% of votes (http://www.wmur.com/politics/28927794/detail.html)

Despite Ron Paul doing so very well in New Hampshire in the 2012 cycle, there are people here that act like he didn't do well. Some people hate the truth and will do whatever they can to deny the truth. However, we will continue to show the facts. That's why this webpage exists. http://freestateproject.org/intro/ron_paul

I like Rand Paul. Heck, I attended his birthday party in 2012 (it was at the Ron Paul NH HQ). You can help by liking this page on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/nhforrandpaul

But their local game is stellar. I can think of 2 states where he did good but when you look at their local politics it looks like a mock politburo.

Yup. Not only did Ron Paul do best in NH, the local game is stellar here. For some reason (I'm partly to blame since I don't care about DC politics outside of the Paul family) the Congress folks from NH currently aren't great. Well, Smith and Sununu were 2 of the best Senators in the modern era. Both of them were likely in the top 10 least bad Senators in the last 20 years. But they aren't currently Senators so. Heck, Guinta was claimed as 1 of the most fiscally conservative Reps. in Congress over and over again. Though, he was crap on social issues. He hated abortion with a passion, couldn't stand same-sex marriage and always seemed to vote against civil liberties issues.

As for both Smith and Sununu, they were both 2 of the least bad Reps. in the US before they became 2 of the least bad Senators in the US.

Sen. Ayotee is better than the average Republican Senator. Jean "the tax machine" Shaheen is better than the average Democratic Senator. However, neither of those sentences is saying much!

I doubt it. I mean, he would be better than Jean "the tax machine" Shaheen but I doubt he will run in NH, despite his family living here for many years and him owning a house here. Sure, he would be an improvement but I think he likes being on Fox News and giving speeches all over the US.
