It hit two schools. There's an active search and rescue going on. A lot of mutual aid being called.

The tornado on first accounts was supposedly 1.5-2mi wide.

They probably made the kids stay there if it was that bad. (tornado sirens or hail) When I was in fourth or fifth grade a tornado siren went off and they held us after for about 30 minutes. The buses waited. I'd assume the drivers came inside to the gymnasium as well but I don't know.

Tornados are unpredictable and sporadic. They might have known that there was a chance for one but it isn't as if they could say for a certainty or know where it would touchdown.

Half of spring/summer is tornado weather.

This. If you stayed home in Tornado Alley every time there was a "possibility" of tornadoes, you would not go out for a number of months.

They are speculating it was an EF-5 tornado. There are reports that 75 kids were inside one of the schools. A reporter said that he saw around thirty kids rescued so far. They are looking for the rest.

Apparently they lined the hallway in a duck and cover position. The school is pretty much collapsed inside itself. The cinderblock walls gone.

I'd also note that being in a school, a large thick building that likely has a decent number of window free rooms, is much safer than rushing kids home during the middle of a tornado.

I doubt anyone did anything wrong here. Just a freak incident that happens from time to time,

Yeah, not much you can do in an EF-5 except pray. From the sounds of it most of the kids were home. The city looks leveled though. I'm surprised they aren't reporting any deaths yet.

grades 4,5,6 are safe. They were not at the school, but at a church 1/4 mile away. Sounds like grade 3 may have not made it, they were taking refuge in a hallway. That hallway is completely gone. no word on k-2 grades

Some do, and some live in trailers, and some don't have time to get into them, and some are away from home, and some live in homes that don't have one and they can't afford to add them on... lots of reasons.

Im sure he gets the point already. But politics are in everything, so politics is going to come up at some point, so when that happens, we will probably have a livesly discussion on why tornados are still legal. Its for the children.

And how about the rest of the town, the little bit of CNN I could watch was all about the school. Theres probably more than 75 kids in the town too. and mommies, and daddies. Gosh I am so ready to drive out there to help with relief.

As an aside, this isn't uncommon. The school is reachable, there are probably rescue units near there even on a good day, and the buildings were large which means a whole lot of debris. The houses were demolished, but people got into windowless rooms, etc.. They are difficult to get to. There are people with backhoes and other equipment helping clear debris from on top of people, and there are people getting to hospitals.

There are also concerns about a movie theater, but it could be the structure fared better.

Fox is reporting that the rescue efforts at the second elementary school are now recovery efforts. They anticipate 24 dead 3rd graders.

Just an update. My cousin works at Moore High school. The school was just north of the tornadoes path. They are fine but their home is was right in the path, so its probably gone. The rest of her family is safe. Aunt and Uncle were visiting family in Norman (didn't realize my two other cousins and family had moved there, so they are fine. Grandparents live in Midwest city which is close to Moore but seems to have been missed, unlike the one in 99 which took out both cities, and my other uncle works north of OKC...so I assume he is good.

All in all, things look ok. Thanks for the prayers.

I believe the 99 tornado (which actually hit the same area) is the strongest, or second strongest tornado ever recorded. 300 mph wind gusts at 100 ft. That's unbelievable.

According to the mets on some of the sites I visit, pictures indicate it was at least an EF4, possible an EF5. Will have to wait for a ground team to survey.

In the video clip Jeff Poor posted, there is no mention of global warming. In the writing and title by Jeff Poor, he mentions global warming but doesn't show the Senator doing it. It is dishonest of Jeff. He seems to be trying to play off the tragedy to get more hits to his blog, but I could be wrong.

Even NH has tornadoes. I think 1 person died in Deerfield a few years ago. Obviously, they are rare up here but they occasionally happen.

Where I lived before NH, tornadoes would destroy areas of downtown and he burbs every few years. Even in a neighborhood I used to live in, several homes were completely destroyed and pretty much all of them were damaged.

As for moving to NH, you might want to visit 1 of the 3 big yearly events up here. Liberty Forum happens during the Winter. Bardo Farm Fest happens during Memorial Day weekend, that's next weekend. Porcfest (http://porcfest.com/) is th 2nd to last weekend of June this year.

Why There Was No Basement Tornado Shelter in That Oklahoma City School
http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/137854.html

In one of my earlier books I cited former New York City Mayor Ed Koch explaining why the city's "infrastructure" (sewer and water lines, bridges and roads, etc.) always seemed to be long overdue for maintenance and rebuilding: "It's hard to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new sewer line," said the mayor.

Government turns everything it touches into crap, and economics provides numerous explanations why. In this case, Mayor Koch hit the nail on the head: Politicians like himself will always spend taxpayers' money in a way that enhances THEIR popularity and maximizes THEIR chances for re-election. There are orders of magnitude more votes to be had in handing out welfare benefits or lavish public employee pensions than in replacing leaky water lines. Public employees are well organized politically; the average taxpaying citizens are not.

As for Oklahoma City, news reports are that there was not an underground basement in that public school where nine children died during the tornado. An explanation is that when it comes to spending money on "schools," broadly defined, there are many, many more votes and campaign contributions to be had by spending the money on increased public school teacher and administrator salaries and pensions than on school building basements. Teachers' unions are famously well organized politically; average taxpayers are not. Putting a basement in a new school building will not motivate government school teachers to spend thousands of hours campaigning and driving voters to the polls in school buses. Promises of pay and pension increases will.

So go ahead. Keep sending your children to government schools.

Homeschool or Die vol. XXXLVI
http://voxday.blogspot.com/2013/05/homeschool-or-die-vol-xxxlvi.html

And yet, in the past four months, we have seen multiple incidences of multiple fatalities due to acts of Man and Nature, but the thought that perhaps it is not wise to congregate large numbers of vulnerable children together never seems to enter the national discourse.

According to Wikipedia, there have been 278 tornado-related deaths at school since 1885. That is nearly 2.2 deaths per year, which is a trivial percentage of the 48 million or so children attending the public schools. And yet, they are entirely avoidable deaths; under the oft-cited "if just one life can be saved" metric, it cannot be denied that children who are not forced to congregate en masse at school cannot be killed by tornadoes there.

Two tornado-inflicted deaths per year isn't much, but add to them the 26 schoolbus deaths per year, the 600 school-automotive deaths per year, and the 34 violence-related deaths, and it soon becomes readily apparent that school cannot reasonably be considered a safe place for children.

Forget the superior education received by homeschooled children. Doesn't saving the lives of more than 662 children every year make banning school a moral imperative?

Especially in light of the fact that 119 children under the age of twelve, (and 565 under the age of 18), were killed by guns. School is literally more lethally dangerous than guns; something you might want to remind your average pro-public school, pro-gun control left-liberal.

Guns secure freedom at a lower cost in children's lives than the public schools manage to deliver inferior educations. We don't need gun control, we need school control.
