Sen. Bob Corker: U.S. soon will be arming Syrian opposition

7th May 2013

Fresh off his golf outing with President Obama, Sen. Bob Corker, Tennessee Republican, predicted Tuesday that the United States will start arming rebel forces in Syria in the near future in hopes of ousting President Bashar Assad.

The ranking GOP member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Mr. Corker said it is time for the Obama administration to “change the balance” in the ongoing conflict.

“I do think we will be arming the opposition shortly,” Mr. Corker said on “CBS This Morning.” “We are doing a lot more there on the ground than really is known, but we do have to change the equation.”

I thought Obama already agreed to give them $100,000 in military equipment? I saw John Kerry on TV talking about it. It doesn't seem that the Senate is even needed. Is the Senate trying to give the terrorist something else?

No. "Non-lethal" equipment only and CIA facilitating arms transfers between gulf states, Turkey etc. but this bill would just remove all pretense and arm AQ directly and also provide them with $250m/year until 2015 I believe.

Crazy.

Rand is speaking against the bill.

He's offering an amendment that would say the 2001 AUMF doesn't allow us to intervene in Syria.

LOL...Rand is saying the AUMF is saying we should go after associated forces with Al Qaeda so technically, we could be arming Assad to go after the rebels instead of the other way around.

Rand's saying that we've been in Afghanistan for 10 years and we still can't trust who we're training so how can we trust these rebels?

Everyone voted against Paul's amendment making the argument that it would create a safe haven for Al Qaeda in Syria since the 2001 AUMF wouldn't apply to Syria.

If you want to go into Syria, pass another AUMF instead of using the 2001 AUMF.

Durbin is already claiming he wants to change the 2001 AUMF anyway.

Chris Murphy was the only to vote for Rand's amendment to not arm the Syrian rebels. It would have been hugely ironic if he didn't due to his anti gun stance.

Yea, Rand really made the case for non intervention using many different arguments.

I suppose the good news out of this is when the 'rebels' start massacring Christians with US arms in Syria Rubio will not be able to win any GOP presidential primary as he's just voted and argued in favor of it.

He's even willing to put his own political future in jeopardy for the crazed neocon agenda.

Flake and Johnson voted against Libya, so they're probably the most likely to oppose Syria, providing conservative activists can convince them from an anti-radical Islam standpoint.
