UKIP leader Nigel Farage was yesterday rescued from a pub by a police riot van after a visit to Scotland descended into chaos.

An angry mob of left-wing and pro-independence protesters stormed an Edinburgh bar and hurled offensive abuse at the politician.

Mr Farage, who travelled to the capital to meet journalists, was told to ‘go home’ to England and branded ‘racist Nazi scum’ as activists – mainly students - chanted anti-British slogans.

The party leader’s press conference was called to an abrupt halt by stunned pub staff, and Mr Farage fought his way out onto Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile.

As the crowds grew, police closed the road, and officers’ attempts to flag down a cab for Mr Farage failed.

The MEP was then bundled back to the pub by police officers, who locked the doors and barricaded him inside. A police riot van eventually arrived to take Mr Farage to safety.

However it's not clear whether they would then become members of the EU or what and so "independence" would be merely symbolic like the Irish.

i have seen political leaders of smaller sized countries actually gain a few points of publicity during these type of events

because information spreads so fast and emotion arouses neighbor to neighbor in a tighter space as relative to the united states. if obama got called names while traveling asia people here would hardly pay attention

Farage would probably be happy to talk to them and point out how their futures are being bankrupted. However they'd probably lynch him and aren't interested in hearing it that's why the police correctly identified the threat to his own safety and got him out of there.

The SNP's stated policy is to leave the UK and join the EU. So, strictly speaking, they're not pro-independence at all; rather they want a more remote and less democratic Federal overlord.

To be clear, many supporters of Scottish independence want to be more like Switzerland than the Netherlands. Since I know so many Scots and Saor Alba supporters, I seriously doubt Scotland would remain in the EU if started to break up.

oh and, Farage is one of the lead opponents of Scottish independence so this is NOT a surprise. UKIP is demonized in Alba.

One of the students mentioned the fact that UKIP want a 5 year freeze on immigration. That strikes me as sensible unless they want the welfare state overloaded and bankrupted ???
