IT will take a while to finish but it could be a giant leap forward for humanity.

We have heard the "clean and cheap energy" claim associated with nuclear energy before. Hasn't panned out so far. But could be interesting.

You understand that fusion is an entirely different animal than the fission at the heart of all existing nuclear reactors?

Yeah. They say it could be at least 2030 before they fire up the ITER http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/12/opinion/fusion-nuclear-energy-future

This is something I'd donate towards if it would help get it off the ground sooner.
It's simple, the energy is in there. That's a theoretical issue.
Now it just needs to be done.

Projects like these need to be finished sooner. IF they let people donate money I am sure they could shore up the money needed.

As a huge fan and beneficiary of the nuclear industry, I'm a fan of any advancement in the field. I'm quite sure that government regulations will make it obscenely difficult to make these plants economically feasible, though.

Agreed while the government does provide money it does make it difficult at the same time though regulations. We might have this technology if not for government.

This is exciting. Interesting that, according to the article, they had to invent their own currency for this project that all countries agreed upon. Nobody mentioned plain old gold?
