Got this e-mail from Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI 11). He opposes the internet sales tax. :)

You might have accountant fees added to your bill the next time you buy a computer online.

The US Senate is about to approved an online sales tax that suffocates the economy. The bill creates new taxes and new paperwork making it impossible for businesses to survive. The Senate put more of the internet under the government’s control. I don’t know why our senators assume more taxes help anyone.

This bill reads like a cash-grab written by bureaucrats who love filing.

The increased taxes and mountains of paper work will force businesses to collapse. Why would they require every business to know the 10,000 different tax regulations that come from states, cities, and local governments? You need an accounting degree to make sense of all of them. Then it requires the businesses to pay all those taxes? No business can afford that.

Our Senators don’t understand the added tax they’re creating. The potential for new revenue in their tax coffers keeps them from realizing the impact this legislation will have. Around the country, businesses will be forced to close because this bill will drag them under.

The worst part of the bill isn’t even the added taxes – which sounds strange. The compliance requirements will hurt businesses the most. Paying someone to pay the thousands of different taxes slowly kills a business. When companies should be hiring a new employee, they’ll have to hire more bean counters instead.

This online sales tax is a bad deal. It punishes people that want to expand through the internet while rewarding people who don’t innovate. The economy needs companies that want to grow, and the internet has to remain a cheap and easy way to expand. That’s why I’ll fight this bill in the US House.

I promised to make it easier for your businesses, not harder. Sign this petition to show your opposition to the online sales tax, and then tell your friends.

Kerry Bentivolio

Here's the full statement from Rep. Tom Graves:

“Call me a conservative, but I believe the right approach to tax fairness is to reduce rates—not force higher rates onto others. States that want their businesses to be more competitive in the marketplace should engage in a race to the lowest tax rate rather than seek to level the playing field by imposing higher taxes and new burdens on competitors and consumers. The Senate legislation would throw a classic Washington wet blanket on the brightest frontier of our economy, the Internet. Life is hard enough in this Obama economy; let’s not make things worse with more taxes.”

This doesn't look good. I didn't think it would get this much Republican support in the house.

One more reason to support Mark Sanford tomorrow and hope he wins. He at least voted against an internet tax in the past, so he will likely vote against it again.

Amen. Unfortunately, most of the media is covering the immigration debate and proponents of this bill are trying to sneak it through when nobody's watching. We need to spread the news about this bill.

However there are 5 in my state that are not saying whether they are for or against it, so it's my job to find out if they are. :D

Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH 1) has come out against this. She will try to bring up the Sen. Jean Shaheen (D-NH) amendment to carve NH out of this bill, also. That means all 4 (2 Senators and 2 Reps) from NH are against it. That's funny because the bill hurts NH and DE the least of all 50 states.

When the proposed Internet sales tax bill comes to the U.S. House for a vote, U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-Rochester, says that not only will vote against it, she will put forth an amendment to carve out New Hampshire small businesses from being impacted.

Don't be fooled by the "Marketplace Fairness Act" (aka the Internet Sales Tax) – it gives the gov't the power to tax the internet & requires small business to collect taxes for states they are not even operating in. Click "Like" and "Share" if you agree that your chances at keeping your hard earned money are better in Monopoly, than under the Obama Administration.

My rep's most recent statement I can find:
“I continue to explore all sides of this issue, but am not enthusiastic about any plan which would increase taxes on consumers, or burden small businesses with additional regulations,” Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said in a statement. “At the very least, I believe the revenue threshold in this bill should be raised to exempt small retailers who are trying to grow their business and may not be able to withstand the costs and headache associated with collecting and distributing these taxes.” http://bismarcktribune.com/business/local/u-s-senate-stalls-bill-to-tax-online-sales/article_a01583b8-aef8-11e2-8ae1-001a4bcf887a.html
