forgive the question as either a sign of uncertainty or ignorance (and mods. feel free to move).

am I wrong to assume that the commander-in-chief can close Guantanamo pretty much by doing something as simple as giving the verbal order to close the damn thing?

- considering writing an LTE titled "profiles in cowardice" and I tend to get published, so just want to get some kind of verification from the good folks here that would know.

a C-I-C can tacitly transfer 90% to 99% of the people and job functions elsewhere via the joint chiefs and standing policy

Of course His Majesty the King can do anything he wants. Why would he close down his torture chamber though?

Registration required to read article. You can still read the first page but that only covers the release of a small number of inmates whose release has already been aproved.

I believe if you search for it on google, you can read the whole thing. There was another FP article that was like that, IIRC. The one about people here being angry with Rand Paul's drone comment.

bump because the article went through the logistics. I just want to know, can the commander-in-chief simply issue the order to close it because he is the commander-in-chief?

or, in other words, is this pussy (Obama) hiding behind a messaged perceived "inability" while, as I suspect, he can simply issue the order and have his underlings in the armed-forces carry it out?

When he campaigned in 2008, I think he really believed he would close it down. Shortly afterward, someone came to him with a convincing argument on why it shouldn't be pursued. Whatever reason they're giving is probably not the real one.

A convincing argument?

Like unseen footage of the Kennedy assassination,,
"You wouldn't want something bad to happen".

I doubt that he was ever serious about closing it.. I really doubt he has any integrity.
That would have disqualified him for the position.

closing Guantanamo?

You mean the prison that was setup outside the United States so that the government can torture people they haven't convicted of crimes and lock them away indefinitely? Yes close that shit down.

AFAIK, he can pardon anybody and they can deport non-citizens. So either just deport them or - not that they should need pardons since they haven't had trials... but he can pardon them for shits/giggles to bypass any congressional directives - pardon, then deport. Or pardon and release into the wild like a bag of ferrets.

"Love to close it down but ma hands are tied bro.
How 'bout a review as I simply and quickly bring peace to the Middle East? Same diff right?
Bring peace to the Middle East and then I'll close it down. Piece of cake. Sorry for any miscommunication there."

One of my cousins friends brothers mothers half-sisters sons has been stuck there for the last 8 years.

FREE Jahandar! He's completely innocent and is no terrorist. He was just trying to scare off a bunch of thieves from Kumar who tried to raid one of our cargo trucks.
