Any sufficiently intelligent and advanced alien species capable of reaching our pale blue dot would have no interest in humanity. We are but ants to that kind of civilization.

They might be interested in the natural resources of this planet though, even if they had no interest in playing with ants.

What makes you think Earth is a resources-rich planet? Presumably, they've gone through the same phase as we're in now, and know how important those rare earth metals and other resources are to our future.

Helium-3 (mostly found on our Moon) is an extremely valuable resource and could be a trillion dollar industry if we started mining it for fusion energy.

What makes you think it's not? I haven't been to any other planets with water, or gold, or Uranium, or anything else, so relative to other planets, I have no idea how rich or poor our planet is. Just the fact that this planet is the correct distance from the sun to be inhabitable probably makes it interesting enough.

Also... Your second sentence seems to presume that if technologically advanced aliens are visiting this planet, that they are also ethical and moral people who have our best interest, and our future, at heart. But there is no reason to believe this by default; look how advanced our technology and civilizations are compared to a couple thousand years ago. And yet our governments still engage in the wholesale slaughter of our own species in immoral wars for the accumulation of wealth and power by a few at the top. Humans aren't much more ethically or morally advanced than our distant ancestors were, in spite of how far we've come with knowledge and technology.

Why? What is unique to our planet that they couldn't find on any other celestial body?

i doubt the whitehouse has first hand knowledge. usually its referenced on the documentaries that the whitehouse is clueless, and even the director of the CIA is denied access.

You'll have to ask them that. No clue.

Why do you shop at one store instead of another one? You could buy the same stuff elsewhere, so what makes you choose that particular store? Is it closer and therefore more convenient than going a mile away to a different location?

There are no "natural resources" here that they would not have encountered in abudance long before getting to this tiny rock.

And no one seems to think that a civilization that's been around, oh, say millions of years (or longer) might've already exhausted a lot of what they've already found, and are constantly seeking new sources for certain elements? Hmmm.... OK.

I tend to agree... I think the history of our evolution on this planet has had a helping hand along the way. (No clue why.)

Extraterrestrial Life- Derived from the Latin Root extra ("beyond", "not of") and terrestris ("of or belonging to Earth"). We throw around terms like billions of years and the light years but we can't actually comprehend them. When we can comprehend the speed of light at 186,282 miles per second, and then apply that rate to distances that span thousands of years, we might be ready to theorize on how aliens might think. This is also assuming that all life that is beyond our rock easily fits into the same category. That's a large assumption isn't it? Not trying to be a smart ass here but think about it. If some form of intelligent life found earth and observed humans, we as in different humans would not fit into the same category. Michelle Obama, Putin, and Justin Bieber come to mind. For this group of aliens to say they understand "alien life" or life beyond their home in the entire universe from just observing humans on this rock would make you wonder how intelligent they really are. This is not flaming anybody or the topic. I probably need a beer.:D

If the ants rose up, we humans wouldn't last very long. Work on your metaphors.

I don't know how accurate this chart is lol. I do know that anything above top secret is classified as "NEED TO KNOW". That's about it.

The "correct distance" I think we will find can be quite variable. We've found life living under extreme pressure at the bottom of the ocean and living in extreme hear in volcano's.

"The fate of a world isn't determined by its best examples, but by its worst. It takes a few to destroy the many, especially when even the best of you can be dragged down into the mire. Judging from your example, brother against brother, friend against friend, you people have such a potential for violence, sheer, unvarnished wickedness, I've got every confidence you'll destroy yourself before you build your first inter-stellar engine. We've got nothing to fear from you."

There are a lot of resources on Earth that are only economic because of 4 billion years of economic activity. Mars, for example, probably has the same resource distribution, but you won't find rare earth metals in hydrothermally formed deposits all over the place. You won't find oil etc.

Oh man this mspaint chart has totally convinced me that our government is run by scientologists. It was really helpful how they grouped the top of the chart together and labeled it "10 levels." Really an eye opener.

But we are industrious ants. We will mine it for them.

Are we assuming that IF there are advanced beings, there is only one advanced specie?

edit: Maybe they are patient, a thousand years like a day, a day like a thousand years, maybe we bring the oil to the surface, maybe..maybe...terraformers

Why the hell would a specie that can travel light years be interested in our resources? Do they need gas to fuel their ships?

So let me see if I understand the argument. We, as a species, are spending billions exploring space and trying to develop "warp drive" so that we could possibly reach another habitable planet orbiting Alpha Centuri, but any other species that might do the same wouldn't?
