Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech giant Monsanto and genetic modification by destroying 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar. Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a 10 year ban on GM foods.

Planetsave reports:

Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been ground with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary, deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.

Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seek traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.

During the invesigation, controllers have found Pioneer Monsanto products among the seeds planted.

The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary, but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and GMO seeds could have been sown on up to the thousands of hectares in the country. Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds.

With season already under way, it is too late to sow new seeds, so this year’s harvest has been lost.

And to make things even worse for the farmers, the company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is under liquidation. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will be paid primarily to that company’s creditors, rather than the farmers.

EXCELLENT! (Not that the farmers may get screwed) But that they ruined the poisonous crops.

the spilling over of DNA modified pollen via stern & swift wind sterilizes any local varieties, i respect Hungary's stance.
i'd only toy with Monsanto's inventory inside a hermetically sealed bio-dome that can be totally carefully controlled!!!

That's great news!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what it would take to get rid of GMO corn if and when we get rid of Monsanto?

What letter to number correlation are you using? It's not ASCII, EBCDIC or sequential.

edit: It's sequential * 6 + 6, starting with a = 0.

We'll see how much money they really have. This could be a big threat to monsanto if it spreads. Wonder if there'll be some 'humanitarian' reason to sanction or invade Hungary. Or an earthquake from the Haarp weapon.

On the other hand, should a farmer be free to grow whatever they want to without the government telling them what they can and can't grow? Should the government be able to come in and seize and destroy farmer's crops?

My thoughts. Think of the farmers who just had thousands or even millions of dollars worth of seed, fertilizer, planting effort, and potential harvest destroyed. Was there any compensation to these farmers? Monsanto was already paid for the seed. Once again, victory for mega-corps, bankers, and government, loss for farmers.

They are free to grow natural crops, not gene spliced mutated crops that have genes of animals and altered genes to protect against RoundUp. GM food has been shown to cause cancer and infertility in studies. They don't want any cross pollinating to happen and ruin farmers' crops that choose to grow only natural crops, so the only solution is to ban it, and I support this choice, it should be banned.

Some farmers that chose to use Monsanto seeds knowing of the ban are breaking the law and should lose their crops. The others that thought they had natural seeds and didn't should be compensated though by the government if they can prove they didn't knowingly violate the ban on GMO crops.

With a genetically modified virus designed to only attack GMO corn. You might have to fight GMOs with GMOs.

So this should also apply to sellers of unpasturized milk and growers of medical marijuana which are illegal in many places since they would be knowingly breaking the law?

In never, never land:

There is a law in your county prohibiting open air hemp growing in order to protect the large marijauna seed industry (Hemp growers are in the next county over). If a hemp grower moves in next door and allows his plants to open-air pollinate ---> Would you be upset that now your High THC marijauna seed crop is ruined as a result of your neighbors actions? Your seed business is now devastated. Should you be upset? Who should be held liable?

just a thought...
