Little Ice Age is Coming in 2014 (http://beforeitsnews.com/alternative/2013/03/little-ice-age-is-coming-in-2014-2585776.html)

Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera, a geophysicist at the University of Mexico agrees by stating that in about 5 years the “Earth will enter a “Little Ice Age” which will last from 60 to 80 years and may be caused by the decrease in solar activity”

Russian Scientists say period of global cooling ahead due to changes in the sun (http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/04/29/russian-scientists-say-period-of-global-cooling-ahead-due-to-changes-in-the-sun/)

Start of 2013 the coldest in 208 years (http://iceagenow.info/2013/04/start-2013-coldest-208-years/)

Prof Warns Mini Ice Age has Started

German meteorologists say that the start of 2013 is the coldest in 208 years – and now German media has quoted Russian scientist Dr Habibullo Abdussamatov from the St. Petersburg Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory, who says it is proof that we are heading for a “Mini Ice Age.”

And now:

Historic Snowstorm Hits Plains to Upper Midwest (http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/snowstorm-potential-for-omaha/11404310)

There have been some snowstorms in May in the region, but they are rare. 1907 sticks out as a benchmark year for a number of locations. However, multiple years during the mid-1940s also brought snow events to the region for several years in a row.

US Headed For The Coldest Spring On Record (https://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2013/05/02/us-headed-for-the-coldest-spring-on-record/)

At the two-thirds mark for meteorological spring, 2013 was the second coldest spring on record – slightly warmer than 1975.

Each blue hump precedes a red hump. So it is reasonable that the red line is increasing when the blue line begins its cyclical decrease (i.e. there are recurring areas of divergence, because the humps are understandably out of phase). The latest part of the graph looks very much like the period from about 1923-1928, but with a much longer period. If there is a trend, I would expect the blue line to turn up again after 2000, and the red line to turn down again. It would be interesting to see the 2000-2013 data.

Be skeptical of the "scientists" at skeptical science. What they don't tell you is that global temps have been flat for two decades.

I think we've been at the doorstep of a mini "ice age" for some time. This relevance has, unfortunately, been lost with all of the political maneuvering premised upon such speak.

the sun ultimately drives the earth's weather. the younger dryas some 13,000 years ago is only incompletely understood.
if we are to be inside a repeat of what isaac newton's contemporaries experianced in his lifetime, this dip in temperature
would balance the increased CO2 emissions we have been doing. we just might be lucky, we might be in a control position
over our global ability to pollute in less than 40 or 50 years, and our increased knowledge will ease us into the new cycle.

One of the issues with any chart like this is the time period covered. We know that climate typically changes slowly over a period of time. 120 years may seem like a long period of time for us but with regards to climate it may be little more than a data point. To see any real relationship between solar activity and temperature it may be necessary to look at 100's or even 1000's of years. Even then it may not show any patterns because there may be other variables that we are minimizing or maybe that we are not even aware of yet.

http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/files/2013/04/globallsta_tmo_2013073_lrg-1024x512.jpg (http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/files/2013/04/globallsta_tmo_2013073_lrg.jpg)NASA image from the MODIS sensor on the Aqua satellite showing temperature anomalies between 14-20 March 2013. The warmth over Greenland caused by the blocking high is clearly visible along with the resulting chill over eastern areas of North America, and much of Western Europe. Click image for a LARGE version.

I mentioned the North Atlantic Oscillation in a recent blog post (http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/2013/03/24/motion-to-dismiss-the-indictment-of-punxsutawney-phil/). The Arctic Oscillation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_oscillation) is closely related to the NAO (http://www.pnas.org/content/98/23/12876.full) and many meteorologists often use the two interchangeably. The AO and NAO have been in a deeply negative phase for several weeks and this has brought unseasonably cold weather to Eastern North America and Western Europe. So cold, that a Ohio prosecutor indicted a Pennsylvania rat (AKA Punxsutawney Phil) for fraud, after a prediction that spring was (and I quote here) “Just around the corner!”
The good news is that this pattern is rapidly breaking down. Not good news if you are hoping for a suntan in Greenland, but for those in the Northeast U.S. and Western Europe, spring is about to be sprung!
Here is what NASA had to say about the image and there is a great link to a table produced by Capital Climate showing that this event was one of the strongest on record:
http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/files/2013/04/arcticoscillation_2013.png (http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/files/2013/04/arcticoscillation_2013.png)Image ctsy. NASA showing how strongly negative the Arctic Oscillation has been for around 8 weeks.

While a high-pressure weather system brought warmer than normal temperatures to Greenland and northern Canada in March 2013, much of North America, Europe, and Asia shivered through weeks of unseasonably cool temperatures. The contrasting temperatures are no coincidence: the same unusual pressure pattern in the upper atmosphere caused both events.

http://blogs.agu.org/wildwildscience/files/2013/04/arctic.jpg (http://livasperiklis.com/2012/06/11/cornell-chronicle-arctic-ice-melt-sets-stage-for-cold-weather/)Cornell Univ. image. Good piece here about how the extremes in the index may be related to the decreasing Arctic sea ice. http://livasperiklis.com/2012/06/11/cornell-chronicle-arctic-ice-melt-sets-stage-for-cold-weather/

Atmospheric pressure patterns are constantly in flux, as air masses of differing temperatures and densities move around the skies. One key measure of pressure that meteorologists track closely is known as the Arctic Oscillation (AO) index (http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/daily_ao_index/ao.shtml), the difference in relative pressure between the Arctic and the mid-latitudes. Changes in the AO have can major impacts on weather patterns around the world.
When the AO index is in its “positive” phase, air pressure over the Arctic is low, pressure over the mid-latitudes is high, and prevailing winds confine extremely cold air to the Arctic. But when the AO is in its ”negative“ phase, the pressure gradient weakens. The pressure over the Arctic is not as low and pressure at mid-latitudes is not as high. In this negative phase, the AO enables Arctic air to flow to the south and warm air to move north.
In late March, the AO dropped as low as -5.6. (See this chart (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/files/2013/03/table-of-record-low-daily-AO-Values.png) published by the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2013/03/21/record-blocking-patterns-fueling-extreme-washington-d-c-march-weather/) to see how this compares with other periods when AO values (ftp://ftp.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/cwlinks/norm.daily.ao.index.b500101.current.ascii) reached record-low levels).
The temperature anomaly map above, based on data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/)(MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua (http://aqua.nasa.gov/) satellite, shows how this affected temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. The map displays land surface temperature anomalies between March 14–20, 2013, compared to the same dates from 2005 to 2012. Areas with above-average temperatures appear in red and orange, and areas with below-average temperatures appear in shades of blue. Much of Europe, Russia, and the eastern United States saw unusually cool temperatures, while Greenland and Nunavut Territory were surprisingly warm for the time of year.
Many parts of the Northern Hemisphere saw near record-breaking cool temperatures as the value of the AO fell. The United Kingdom experienced its 4th coldest March (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/news/releases/archive/2013/cold-march-statistics) since 1962. In late-March, two-thirds of weather stations in the Czech Republic broke records. (http://praguemonitor.com/2013/03/25/cold-weather-breaking-records) Germany saw its coldest March since 1883. (http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/cold-german-winter-refuses-to-warm-up-for-easter-a-891468.html) And Moscow had its coldest March (http://www.themoscowtimes.com/mobile/news/article/477498.html) since the 1950s.

Personally, I'm quite apolitical when I complain about unpleasant weather, and in true midwestern spirit, I rather enjoy complaining about it. That said, it's supposed to be safe to plant tomatoes in my area in five days, and ronpaulfollower999's map looks to be yet another gardening buzz kill. Unpleasant weather is unpleasant.

The west coast of Florida was exceptionally cold this morning. One city near Tampa dropped down to 46°, smashing the old record low of 52° set in 2006. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Tampa, said March was one of the ten coldest months on record (80 years of data) for the region, and for the first time, March was colder than the four previous months.

Much of Florida was 8-10° below average during March, and we had one of the coldest March's on record. How would this be consistent with AGW?

in the new SECRETS OF THE DEAD episode CAVEMAN COLD CASE that is viewable on PBS has footage
where about ten minutes of the episode goes into the B.C climate changes over time from about 50,000
to 25,000 years ago, and the cooler and spartan area in the north of Spain is contrasted to the ample
food resources that are to be found in the south of Spain. Two cave areas are contrasted. there was a dry
and colder epoch, as modern man emerges from several of the areas in Africa + all examples of ancient
CroMagnon/Neanderthal hybrid vigor! The longish cave system that is near the French coast has a debris
field "cone" where a specific sinkhole created by running water deposited what appears to be something
like a tragic Donner pass episode where there are a few survivors of a family unit or a massacre of a very
small clan unit. the ancient bones have cut marks on them suggesting cannibalism. Spain had climate changes.
