Are those figures like official US figures? (I.e. manipulated down?).

In Austria you do not count as "officially unemployed" if you attended a useless government "job training" anytime in the last couple of monts. Make of that what you will. ;)

I don't know about the other countries.. But this map is not accurate for the Netherlands or 'Holanda' in this map.

The map says 6.4% for the Netherlands, the official government statistics say:
8.1% unemployment for March of 2013
2.9% inflation for march of 2013
-1.2% economic growth in the last quarter of 2012

http://www.cbs.nl/nl-NL/menu/cijfers/default.htm

So I'm not sure where they get their numbers... The government says it's higher.

The map says Eurostat but does not indicate a date. Latest Eurostat Unemployment figures: http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/tgm/table.do?tab=table&language=en&pcode=teilm020&tableSelection=1&plugin=1

Total Code: teilm020
The unemployment rate represents unemployed persons as a percentage of the labour force

It shows Nederlands 6.4% as of March 2013.

THey took Greece out of the equation, it seems?

Gimme a few - I'll hack out a new one so we can compare apples to apples.

Yep. If there is one thing governments fear then it's an army of unemployed young men.

Unless there's a foreign enemy to shoot - in which case unemployed young men are the wet dreams of the polito/banking class.

Crazy. Does anyone know what it it actually like in some of these countries right now? Seems like people would be panicking.

True. I've seen a sociologist a couple of times on TV who investigated the history of population and war and came to the conclusion that as soon as the rate of unemployed young men exceeded a certain point almost always a major war (either civil or foreign) was the result. But I doubt the Spanish government has the power to funnel this aggression into something "useful" for them.

Most of them are still on government wellfare. As long as that is the case nothing will change, imho. The question is: How long can it continue?

I really believe we need to come up with a comprehensive approach to revive Say's Law to finally get rid of Keynesianism. That's the only way destroy the non-sensical idea that investments can ever be anything else than not consumed income.

Im so lucky my Micro teacher is Austrian or at least Austrian sympathetic. Kinda on the border, maybe Chicago school.

My macro teacher on the other hand is a dumb bitch who says possibly the dumbest things utterable yet the class loves her.

Yeah, the Keynesian paradigm is a mindtrap. That's why Chicago style macro is not really all that great. They totally accepted the Keynesian apparatus ("We're all Keynesians now!"). Milton Friedman was absolutely fantastic on micro-economic issues, but on macro their level of abstraction dillutes their view, imho.

We got to stress the point that Keynesian AD functions, seperate from AS functions, are a ludicrous theoretical concept and make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The old versus the new. I didn't convert it to Portugese and Malta and Luxomberg seem to have escaped. I'll change it later. I don't know why Greece and Estonia have been removed from the results though.

Aside from that, the data seems to be the same. ???

To start panic you need to know what are you facing.

Whats it like in croatia economically?

How the hell could I know. I just live here.:D

Well our national bank just sold our gold. We dont have inflation but portions of food are smaller. Before it was usual to have pasta that is 500g but now and very rapidly is replaced by 400g pasta packages with same price. It is better than in Spain, Greece and Cyprus, Italy, Portugal.... Unemployment rate is not applicable to us because of many veterans that are permanently disabled during war and that will never return to their pre-war jobs. We are not that much in debt (lol "not that much"... it is a lot but comparet to USA and some other countries we are "fine"). In general government sucks. We could go either way. Since we are small country our economic situation depends largely from global economic systems (Germany, France, USA...) and that sucks.

Interesting. Are you guys still set to join the EU? is there a strong euro skeptic movement in croatia or is it mostly pro EU pro Euro?

ROFL dont be. Balkans (Bosnia, Serbia...) governments are so corrupt and untrustworthy that any data would be a joke. In Bosnia it is about 50%.

Interesting. Are you guys still set to join the EU? is there a strong euro skeptic movement in croatia or is it mostly pro EU pro Euro?

Joining soon. I wouldnt call it strong. I would call it disorganized. Simple fact is that joining EU increases living standard and in global economic crisis it is argument that no one could defeat. Personally I think Croatia is in unique position because open labor market. We got educated people and cheaper workforce that could draw a lot of business in Croatia... and now I wait to see how is our government going to screw this opportunity.
