View Full Version : Students suspended for 'twerking' video

A group of high school students has been suspended from Scripps Ranch High School and may not be able to attend prom or walk during commencement ceremonies because of a video made at school that depicts “twerking,” a suggestive manner of dancing.

Parents and students confirmed that many were suspended and told not to return to school until Friday. School board member Kevin Beiser said he was told 31 students were suspended.

Jack Brandais, a spokesman for the San Diego Unified School District, said he could not discuss student discipline matters.

The video apparently violates the school’s sexual harassment policy that prohibits verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Twerking involves the shaking and twisting of hips in a suggestive dance move.

I didn't see the video, but I'm assuming that is what happened here.

Another motivation, independent thought:

Lyston McNear, a 17-year-old senior, said he was suspended even though he didn’t appear in the video or shoot it, but because he came up with the original idea for the project.

www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/may/01/twerking-students-suspension-dance-scripps-ranch/ (http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/may/01/twerking-students-suspension-dance-scripps-ranch/)

AFAIK, coming up with ideas doesn't violate "the school’s sexual harassment policy that prohibits verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature".

Eh, there was dancing in Footloose. What the kids did was a sexual act and not dancing. I'm not saying they should or shouldn't be suspended, I make no judgement on that. But this is not dancing.

If this is enough to get students suspended, I would hate to see the school's reaction when they learn none of these kids are virgins.

"His kind of music is deplorable, a rancid smelling aphrodisiac...It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people."
-Frank Sinatra, 1950s

“It isn’t enough to say that Elvis is kind to his parents, sends money home, and is the same unspoiled kid he was before all the commotion began. That still isn’t a free ticket to behave like a sex maniac in public.”
-Eddie Condon, "Cosmopolitan," December 1956

So people could rip their clothes off on stage and engage in intercourse, and it is still dancing because people said similar things about Sinatra.

Religion means nothing. If your dancing is spiritual in nature, then great. Sex is one of the most spiritual acts humans can engage in. They aren't really different per se.

There's a new type of dancing I've seen around, popular among younger kids, where you always stay connected to your partner at one point on your body (could be your back, shoulders, arms, chest, etc) and the movements are very odd. It looks like the couples are constantly falling onto / all over each other. It's one of the most interesting things I've seen especially when there are a bunch of people doing it right by each other. I actually found a webpage about it a couple weeks ago but I forgot what it was called and can't find any videos of it at the moment. Anybody else know what I'm talking about?

It would seem that practically all dancing is to some degree of a provocative nature. The older generation in the 1950s-1960s was saying that rock 'n' roll wasn't music - it was Satanic mumbo jumbo that had no coherent sound. I think since dancing and music are owned by culture and what people make of them, we can't really have any clear-cut description of what it actually is that lasts us through the ages.

So what is dancing? If we are to rule out "twerking," as a sexual act rather than a dance than I think we should rule out "Samba," "Bachata," and practically all of the Latin dances.

It's dancing and sexual. Bill Cosby used to dance like that. Surely the two-step is sexual because it seems outside the norm for people of the same sex to do it. I wonder why...

I think a lot of us make the mistake of thinking the human culture began in the 1950's and Norman Rockwell was there to paint it. In the whole grand scheme of things, this dance move is not that controversial.

Well where do you draw the line between what's dancing and what's a "sexual act?" Social ethics evolve with time, and perhaps what was considered sexual sixty years ago is considered dancing today. But all of this is essentially beside the point when you have schools that suspend students for doing something in their private time - although on a personal level I see these kids as lucky. They get a break from a ridiculous and totalitarian system.
