[Paul] Ryan, however, strongly stands in support of a controversial tax, one being lobbied hard by well-connected special interests.

“To me, I think the concept is right,” the Janesville Republican said of the proposed Marketplace Fairness Act, which would allow state tax collectors the ability to compel out-of-state online and catalog retailers to collect sales tax at the time of a transaction.

Ryan says the legislation is a fairness issue.

“It’s only fair that the local brick-and-mortar retailer be treated the same as the big-box online sales company out of state,” he said. “The key is this can’t be a slippery slope used to tax other things. This can’t be a slippery slope to do other things, to make sure that we’re just having fairness for retailers in purchasing online sales.”

In an emailed statement to The Hill, Ryan clarified that he does not support the Senate's legislation on the issue.

"It's got to be done the right way. I think the legitimate concern is can it be used to do other forms of taxation or retroactive taxation? You have got to make sure it doesn't do that. I don't think the Senate bill is written in a tight enough way to do that," Ryan said.

He added that it's unfair for a local brick and mortar retailer to have to collect sales taxes when online competitors are exempt.

"So I'd like to think there's a way to address this inequity without giving the government power to expand taxing authority beyond that intent. You've got to do it the right way," Ryan said.

So Paul Ryan supports a national internet tax but just doesn't want it to expand to other forms of taxation or retroactive taxation.

Hey counterfeit paul, maybe the local store should be treated like the big box internet yadda yah and shouldn't be taxed into submission, that both local brick and mortar and internet based warehouses should be exempt from tax.

Norquist should make sure Ryan is primaried. make an example out of him.

if Ryan really wanted fairness and equality he should lobby Johnson to abolish the Wisconsin sales tax.

I sure am glad this man that the media calls "libertarian" is not vice president. The Romneys and Ryans do more damage to libertarianism than the Obamas and Bidens.

Former GOP Vice Presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) says he believes the “concept” of an Internet tax is correct but that “it’s got to be done the right way.”

In an email to The Hill, Ryan said, “I think the legitimate concern is can it be used to do other forms of taxation or retroactive taxation? You have got to make sure it doesn't do that. I don't think the Senate bill is written in a tight enough way to do that. So I'd like to think there's a way to address this inequity without giving the government power to expand taxing authority beyond that intent.”

Ryan, who does not support the Senate’s version of the bill, says taxing on online purchases would help level the playing field for brick-and-mortar stores that have to collect sales taxes.

But Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) says an Internet sales tax would not increase tax fairness; rather, it would grow government while creating a job-crushing regulatory nightmare. Specifically, Cruz says an Internet sales tax would force online retailers to calculate and collect taxes for 9,600 state and local tax jurisdictions, figure out the sales tax holidays of 10,000 jurisdictions, submit monthly or quarterly tax returns to the 46 states that collect sales taxes, and collect taxes from the 565 federally recognized Indian tribes.

“So, how is this fair?” says Cruz. “After all, brick and mortar stores aren’t subjected to all these rules. And, how is it fair for a Texas business to collect taxes to support California Gov. Jerry Brown’s big spending?...Make no mistake: Big business supports this bill because it will drive smaller competitors off the Internet and out of business.”

Online retail giants Amazon and Walmart support an Internet sales tax.

How is this guy still considered Tea Party?

Wasn't Congressman Paul Ryan the one that pushed legislation recently, "If you owe the IRS money they allegedly claim you owe, your US Passports are confiscated and you are now a prisoner of the US? Something along the lines of that and if you leave the country still owing the IRS, you're charged with illegal flight/escape? Something of that sort, such a NEOCON GOP party hack, eh?

How conservative of Paul Ryan and this phony Republicanism from Wisconsin. He's really turned into a Marxist trashbag in sheep's clothing, eh?

And? Who cares? You really wouldn't expect the running mate of Mitt Romney to do anything that wasn't pointed in the direction of oppression, would you?

Folks need to quit politics. Deep down nobody expected Ron to just waltz into the White House, because deep down everyone knew that the system is devoid of equity. Are you telling me we should be concerned about what hocus-pocus schlock goes on in a system like that? Anything Paul Ryan does should come as no surprise to anyone - that goes for all "representatives."

No kidding. He's the first "libertarian" I've seen who supports gun control and higher taxes. He should stick to religion rather than vomiting on about something that he's never even read about.
