WASHINGTON — Americans overwhelmingly favor installing video surveillance cameras in public places, judging the infringement on their privacy as an acceptable trade-off for greater security from terrorist attacks, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

A week after the Boston Marathon attack, which was unraveled after the release of video footage of the two suspects flushed them out of hiding, 78 percent of people said surveillance cameras were a good idea, the poll found.

...

More broadly, only 20 percent of people said they believed the government had gone too far in restricting civil liberties in the fight against terrorism, while 26 percent said it had not gone far enough and 49 percent said the balance was about right. In 2011, the share of those worried about losing civil liberties (25 percent) was larger than that favoring more intrusive government approach (17 percent).

Long article, not linking the entire thing, but these are the key parts. Very troubling poll... but a few things that bug me about the poll is they don't link to it so I don't know if the results are accurate. Might just be NY Times propaganda.

The part I like is 25% are worried about loosing their civil liberties. That's 8 times the size of the number that took part in the revolution or almost a 1/3rd of those who supported them. I may be the "Jerk" but I think were just about there at this point. We are no doubt in the beginning stages of a revolution.

Well which is it AF?

Aren't you always saying people don't want liberty and will need to be shown the light kicking and screaming?

This poll is ridiculous. The FOX News poll a few days ago showed that for the first time since 9/11, more Americans are not willing to surrender liberty for "security." This poll though will bring this guy out of the woodwork to pitch for more surveillance...

I am...but I honestly don't know...is this a "gotcha" post or are you seriously asking me?

Because I'll be honest, Boobus has me flummoxed...I see this, and then numerous polls contrary to this.

Given the NY Slimes distinction as the government organ of record, I'd just assume that this is poorly worded polling propaganda.

On the one hand this local poll shows a full 1 out of 4 is awake. On the other hand the majority still sways toward Big Brother.

On the one hand Homeland Security figures another billion bullets are needed.

On our hand, the people are saying what time you got? It's about one minute past 12 sir. I like what's happening here, keep spreading the message were going to sink this ship.

It was a serious question.

Good, 'cos it was a serious answer...I'm baffled.

Hopeful, but baffled...the mob is fickle...maybe we can push them over the edge.

Public cameras themselves aren't as bad as the future (or now) where the government will track everywhere you go with face recognition as a backup to tracking everywhere you go with your cellphone.

Part of the reason people don't want liberty is because the propaganda arm enforces the idea that people don't want liberty. It's called "marketing". There's a whole science behind getting people to want what they normally wouldn't want. That said, like AF, I've seen contradictory polls. Some have been posted here.

According to their poll:

"Overall, in its efforts to fight terrorism, do you think the U.S. government has gone too far in restricting people's civil liberties, or has it not gone far enough, or has the balance been about right? "

29% of Republicans say 'Not Far Enough' opposed to 24% of Democrats. Only the '65+' bracket ranks higher at 32%.

22% of Rebublicans say 'Too far" opposed to just 13% of Democrats. '18-19y' is the highest ranking bracket at 30%.

Most people just don't care it seems... 45% of Rebublicans and 54% of Democrats think 'It's just fine'. Not a lot of difference. The topic title therefore seems appropriate.

Another fake poll by the NY Times reminds me of that CNN 90% want gun control. Even with Gun controls crime rates will go up.

Polls like this can swing huge in one way over a very short span. Observe Rand awakening people on drones and how their opinion dramatically changed after the filibuster.
