"ArsTechnica reports: 'While the whole country is relieved that this past week's Boston Marathon bombing ordeal and subsequent lockdown of the city is finally over, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis told the Washington Post that the department's facial recognition system "did not identify" the two bombing suspects. "The technology came up empty even though both Tsarnaevs' images exist in official databases: Dzhokhar had a Massachusetts driver's license; the brothers had legally immigrated; and Tamerlan had been the subject of some FBI investigation," the Post reported on Saturday. Facial recognition systems can have limited utility when a grainy, low-resolution image captured at a distance from a cellphone camera or surveillance video is compared with a known, high-quality image. Meanwhile, the FBI is expected to release a large-scale facial recognition apparatus "next year for members of the Western Identification Network, a consortium of police agencies in California and eight other Western states," according to the San Jose Mercury News. Still, video surveillance did prove extremely useful in pinpointing the suspects"

Prediction: Success From Boston Surveillance In Bombing Manhunt Will Lead To More Spying Everywhere

... and a quote from one of the replies to the 2nd news article ....

Now here is something else to consider. You would like to think that the surveillance video would help protect US from the police. You would be wrong. Just this week the Cop (Tony Bologna_) who pepper sprayed those two Occupy women was not prosecuted. The judge said that without video before and after the incident they couldn’t be sure it wasn’t justified.

Or how about the case where they Occupy Wall street person was accused of attacking an officer. The police had a camera person their but the camera “wasn’t turned on” now in this case it was Occupy person against Cop and the Cop was going to walk, but luckly there was a camera person their from Democracy Now who had enough footage before during and after to show that the Occupy person did nothing.

So my conclusion is, ‘If you are going to be in a surveillance society, don’t assume it will protect you. Start your own surveillance and stream it off site. This gives you the ability to at least have a different angle of the image to be used to defend yourself.” They are tapping you, tape them.

He's right. In this surveillance society, any evidence that helps you to prove the guilt of the police or just your own innocence will be immediately dismissed.

Guilty until proven innocent.

They are trying to use that to expand its capabilities. Forget it.

They should have uploaded the images to Facebook. They are supposed to be 90-95% correct at ID'ing ppl.

There is also this:

Remember, over 100 analysts went over in excess of 1,500 hours of video before they found that. This is not a tool that will be routinely used, and as it's been shown that they can do that, opposition tactics are sure to change.

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis also told the Washington Post that the department's facial recognition system will seek advice from Steven Spielberg on how to make it more accurate.

I find this part interesting...

Surveillance was so successful that they have yet to reveal the suspects removing their backpacks and setting them down.

Industrial Light & Magic must not be finished with that scene yet.

And with such low rez camera's, an 8yo should have been able to do it with stick figure flip book animation.
