Self-driving cars face host of legal hurdles
One group of people eagerly awaiting the arrival of autonomous (self-driving) vehicles are lawyers, according to a recent report. While the soon-to-arrive vehicles are sure to save countless lives, a host of legal opportunities will emerge with regards to product liability, tort law, negligence, foreseeable harm, patent encumbrance, and design defects.

California: Murrieta may sue over red-light cameras
Murrieta will consider suing American Traffic Solutions for continuing to collect data on city drivers after the City Council ordered the Arizona company to shut off the data-collecting cameras. Council members used strong words to describe their anger after learning last week that American Traffic Solutions left the sensors inside the cameras active for months to collect the data without the city’s knowledge.

Maryland: Baltimore suspends speed camera tickets amid new mistakes
Baltimore officials announced Tuesday that they have suspended the city’s troubled speed camera program amid fresh reports of erroneous tickets, this time involving a new multimillion-dollar camera network. A recently installed camera on The Alameda has wrongly issued tickets, citing motorists for exceeding a 25 mph limit when the posted limit is 30 mph.

Atlanta: Attorney accuses APD of enforcing arrest quotas
An attorney has accused the Atlanta Police Department of enforcing arrest quotas.

Court rejects routine no-warrant DUI blood tests
The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that police usually must try to obtain a search warrant from a judge before ordering blood tests for drunken-driving suspects.

Missouri: Drivers flashing lights to signal speed traps gets police sued
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the Ellisville Police Department Wednesday morning. The lawsuit claims the Ellisville police have been illegally ticketing drivers that flash their high beams to other drivers to warn them about speed traps. Ellisville did drop the charges against the man in question, but the ALCU is still proceeding against the city for this recurring fine.

New Hampshire: Bill to raise speed limit from 65 to 70 on portion of I-93 headed to governor
The state Senate Thursday passed to Gov. Maggie Hassan legislation that would raise the speed limit from 65 to 70 miles per hour on about 80 miles of Interstate 93, from Canterbury to the Vermont border. The bill passed the House on a vote of 292-65 on March 13.
