Those of you with the means, those of you that have been thinking about it...I think the time is now to haul ass.

At this point, I don't think it really matters where to, just away from here.

From an article on the FBI's release of the Boston bombing suspects:

The volume of information is likely to grow, joined now by a torrent of tips from people who think they might know the suspects

Judy and Marc Ehrlich watched the marathon from a spot between miles 25 and 26 on Monday and felt the ground shake when the bombs exploded. The couple said it was creepy to see images of the suspects who were there at the same time, walking around. But they were comforted that the FBI had come up with suspects.

"Unless they kill themselves, they're going to get found," Marc Ehrlich said. He added: "There's nowhere in the world to hide."

According to Canadian historian Robert Gellately's analysis of the local offices established, the Gestapo was—for the most part—made up of bureaucrats and clerical workers who depended upon denunciations by citizens for their information.[36] Gellately argued that it was because of the widespread willingness of Germans to inform on each other to the Gestapo that Germany between 1933 and 1945 was a prime example of panopticism.[37] Indeed, the Gestapo—at times—was overwhelmed with denunciations and most of its time was spent sorting out the credible from the less credible denunciations.[38] Many of the local offices were understaffed and overworked, struggling with the paper load caused by so many denunciations.[39] Gellately has also suggested that the Gestapo was "a reactive organization" "...which was constructed within German society and whose functioning was structurally dependent on the continuing co-operation of German citizens".[40]

I've seen a lot of folks here posting that this is "The Last Stand for Liberty" and such. I'm more and more convinced that's BS. I'm thinking South America or Canada are good...but eastern Europe and Asia are also appealing. Native English speakers can make some good $ over there, so I'm told.

I hate the idea so much, and was adamantly opposed to it, but as the years have gone by, I just find the situation here to be more and more untenable, that my thinking has now come around on, at least for some folks.

Me, I'm old and fat and recalcitrant...they are not running me off, not after 300 years of family here.

But for somebody with no ties...yeah, haul ass.

This is going to get ugly here, and soon, and when the SHTF there will be no getting out.

That fence will be used to keep you in.

The way I see it for myself is, I've spent my entire adult life fighting all the bs. And while there is some progress, I still see a net loss from where I've started. It's rather discouraging.

I still will help out the liberty movement, both in the United States and outside the United States. Truth be told, where I'm going I will have more of an impact than where I am now.

However, the people I see in the US today are not the same people at all as when I was born. Everyone has gone off the deep end with socialist and statist beliefs, I can hardly recognize it anymore and I'm not even that old AND I was raised with relatively state-worshipping principles. Things have changed drastically in 10 years alone. The only thing that is going to wake them up is an economic collapse. It's gotten so bad that I sincerely fear an extended period of marshal law plus implementation of Japanese internment-like FEMA camps would be welcomed with open arms by the majority to save us from whatever boogeyman lies around the next corner.

Until that point I'm going to try to do some other good things in other parts in the world.

I hope it makes sense for me to live here again. The history the US has is amazing and unparalleled throughout the world in its dedication to freedom. But today I see that freedom that I was raised to respect in other countries more than I see it here. On paper the US is still leaps and bounds ahead of where I'll be going, but someone's got to take the plunge and let everyone else know if there's a better life to be made somewhere else. I console myself by knowing that the people who founded the United States were driven by the same spirit.

Speaking of which, I started the process to apply to another country for citizenship today. It's going to take 6-8 months, after which point, the State Department will "allow" me to renounce my citizenship given that I wont be a stateless person due to having another passport. I might get cold feet at the end and bail out, but we'll see.

It's an EU country that I qualify for citizenship by descent for. It has prohibitively high taxes, but I wont be living there anyway - I will instead be living in a country whose taxes for my purposes are nonexistent for income earned outside of that country.

There's a long journey ahead of me it seems.

I would be totally fine staying a US Citizen, but the problem is that the US, unlike nearly every other country in the world, taxes you on income earned outside of the United States. That's just plain unacceptable to me over the long term. Luckily my net worth isn't over 2 million, and I don't have outstanding debt to the IRS over 139,000, so I understand I wont have to pay the dreaded "exit taxes," where they can bill you for taxes for up to 10 years after renouncing citizenship. So I figure I better leave before I get to either of those points. I would try to hold out, but as I alluded to earlier, it doesn't look like things are getting any better on many fronts, and I certainly don't think they'll repeal taxation on income earned outside of the United States any time soon.
