On July 10, 2003, just two months after President Bush’s now-infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, before the bulk of the thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis perished in the firestorm unleashed by the US invasion, Rep. Ron Paul gave the historic and stirring speech, “Neo-Conned” in the House of Representatives. Patriotic fervor raged, skeptics were called un-American, yet with nearly ten years having passed, this speech is as relevant and as prescient as anything he has done.
We are kicking off the inaugural edition of “Neo-Con Watch” with this classic speech.
Here is the untold story behind the speech:
For days after this speech was delivered, Ron Paul’s congressional office buzzed with irate calls from neo-conservatives who were called out in the speech. They threatened lawsuits, they pounded their fists in the sand, the demanded retractions. Some even wrote irate articles in their heavily subsidized neo-conservative magazines about what a monster Ron Paul was for pointing out the truth about their twisted and destructive philosophies. They left vicious messages on our telephones at all hours of the day. Even on the weekends. When we returned to work on Monday morning, our voice mails would be full of their threats and gnashing of teeth. We in the office knew immediately that Dr. Paul had hit a nerve.
