LOL. You know what's really going here, right?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal health regulators will require generic versions of the best-selling painkiller OxyContin to include recent formulation changes designed to make the pill harder to abuse.

The Food and Drug Administration said late Tuesday it would not approve any generic versions of OxyContin based on the original formulation because it "poses an increased potential for certain types of abuse."

The FDA decision is a key victory for Purdue Pharma LP, which spent years developing a tamper-resistant version of the blockbuster pain pill. The company's patent on original OxyContin expires Tuesday. Normally such expirations open the door to a slew of cheaper versions from generic drug manufacturers. However, the FDA decision effectively protects Purdue from lower-price competition by requiring generic companies to develop their own abuse-deterrent designs.

Backdoor around patent expiration and keeping the price of "synthetic heroin" up.

Someone has really good lobbyists...

Please. OxyContin or any other drug is no more subject to abuse in generic form than patented monopoly pricing.

It drives crime, though. Last I heard, Oxy was going for about $40 a pill on the street. Take your average junky, and they can't afford that without robbing people. Now if it was $5 a pill, they could pay for that flipping burgers or just hanging on a street corner with a "homeless - please help" sign.

Look back on our own history, opium dens were available to whomever wanted to enter, Sears sold tincture of opium, morphine and even heroin via mail order...

Thank goodness government came along and protected us from the evil scourge those drugs caused.....

Everything government gets involved in hurts society every-damn-thing!

That's right. Make bricks without painkillers. And 40 hours isn't enough to make ends meet any more, either. Suck it up, Mr. Chronic Pain, and put your shoulder to the wheel once again.

Or else.

What they want them to do is to make the pill uncrushable. (putty like) Many people snort oxycontin. That is the abuse they are trying to deter. (they already do it to other pills)

Don't forget changing the acetaminophen formulation so it can't be removed easily which will cause the folks who require higher than standard doses of oxycontin to risk renal failure because they won't be able to easily remove the federally mandated poison...
