NY Town Removes Veterans’ Gadsden Flag For Being an Offensive Tea Party Symbol

The United Veterans Memorial & Patriotic Association is fighting a New York town for the right to fly the Gadsden flag bearing the phrase, "Don't Tread On Me."

The veterans group had flown the flag, used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps since 1775, at the New Rochelle Armory, but the*city council claimed it was an offensive Tea Party symbol and voted to have the flag removed.

The Examiner reports that the city council voted 5 to 2 Wednesday to keep the veterans from hoisting the Gadsden flag. Council members said that because*Peter Parente, president of the veterans group, is a Tea Party member, he is simply trying to make a political statement.

Parente acknowledged that while he is a "proud Republican," no one in his veterans' group belongs to the Tea Party.

According to the website Talk of the Sound, one council member compared the Gadsden to the gay pride flag while another member likened it to Nazi and, more oddly, Mickey Mouse flags.

I'm really surprised how hard it is to find a mickey mouse flag, tons of pins, figurines and artwork where he's carrying a flag or made up like a us flag or has a flag background, but actual flags that aren't holiday specific - seem to be scarce...

And I couldn't find a single damn anything of Mickey wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross :( :confused:

A neighbor a couple of blocks over on a major street has one (Gadsden) hanging from his porch for all the passing traffic to see. Priceless!

After the vote, during the public discussion period of the City Council meeting veterans, their children and other supporters of the United Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Society of New Rochelle spoke passionately about those who died fighting under the Gadsden flag as early as 1775 during the early days of the American Revolution and in modern day wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Global War on Terror.

The United Veterans sent a color guard to the New Rochelle Armory to receive, fold and secure the Gadsden flag. Moments later, DPW workers approached the color guard members and stated that they were orders to confiscate the flag and return it to City Hall. The veteran holding the flag handed it to a DPW worker and took the flag to City Hall where it remains today.

Clinton was President, and chose to have such a flag behind him. As Commander-In-Chief of our entire Military, it was his choice. If he had chosen not to have that flag behind him, it would not have been there.

Likewise, the New Rochelle City Government runs the NR Armory, and it is our City Government's choice not to have the Gadsden Flag raised on City-owned property.

The problem with the Gadsden Flag, is that its historical importance has been corrupted by its symbolic use by the Teabaggers.

Why the Teabaggers find symbolic importance in the Gadsden Flag, has yet to be explained. Certainly, today's Teabaggers would have been the 'Tories' during the Revolution, rather than the 'Patriots'.

Can anyone explain why the Teabaggers have co-opted the historical Gadsden Flag? No one here seems able to explain why.

It should be responded to in the exact same way as a lefty would respond to someone using the word "******". Whatever to topic of discussion is, is immediately dropped and the focus of discussion becomes the persons "racism".

If it is a "public" building then it is governed by the local government. It's an H.O.A. situation.
